Can anyone guide me on the online service for transferring reg from one car to another?
Been on the DVLA site and looks like I need to retain reg first and then complete another seperate form for new vehicle?
I'm confused?

I think you should be able to assign the reg directly to the ‘new’ car without putting the plate onto retention, if you already own both vehicles.

If the new car is brand new it is probably more complicated as the recipient car doesn’t have an existing registration number.

First one to remove plate and pay £80 seems straightforward, it's the next part I'm not sure of, pretty sure I need to do this in 2 parts!

You can transfer straight if both cars are registered in your name and you own both, otherwise you have to put the reg on retainer and then transfer it when you have the v5, I believe both cost £80

Both currently in my name, I'm just not sure if it's a 1 or 2 form process and if I need to pay £80 twice!

It depends what you are doing with the reg you are replacing, basically you pay £80 per reg,, so if you take a personall reg off one car and put it on another, the original reg of the car you are taking it off will go back on, and you put it on you new car , that reg will go into limbo until you take the personalised reg off then again the original goes back on it , so that is £80, hope that makes sense!!! If you are playing musical chairs with reg numbers, each one will be £80

You only pay once, as above. We did it last year and it was straight forward as far as I remember.

Assuming the car you are going to transfer the plates to has already got a registration plate, you only need to pay £80,
If I remember right, you take the number off your old car (£80) form all done they give you a reference no and you use that to put on your new car no cost, so two parts one payment

Senario 1. You own vehicle or are buying a brand new vehicle to attach the number to.

Buy your private reg from the DVLA or one of the DVLA recommended web sites. They will either provide you with a retention certificate or transfer the number for you.

Your car will always retain its original reg no no matter what private reg you attach to it.

Example:

Bought my Z4 35is from Swansea, original no CP64 VHR
Bought a private plate on the internet WZ 498
Company transferred the number for me as part of the price.
New Log Book (sorry I'm old) received along with a retention certificate for the new number
Affix new number plates, sit back and smile
