Selling privately and car tax

Post by Ducklakeview » Thu Mar 08, 2018 7:25 pm

It's easily done IF you trust the buyer. All I do is do the change of ownership online on the last day of the month, you can only do this 7am - 7pm at the website https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

This then cancels the tax and also does the change of keeper, so no need to send the V5C off, I just then liaise with new owner, who taxes the car online the following morning using the new keeper slip.

They then receive a new V5C in their name a week or so later.

I tried that & stupidly assumed as it was all on line that anytime up to midnight would suffice...

Don't do it on line (unless you are now obliged to do so). I bought a car towards the end of the month and the vendor was a little tardy sending off the paper V5 such that the road tax was not cancelled until the end of the month. I taxed it only from the beginning of the next month.
The car was taxed continuously, so did not ping ANPR cameras, he had all of the remaining whole months refunded and I paid only from the start of the next whole month.

Mike is correct it's the 7 o'clock cut off time that you need to remember. As long as you change keeper before the 1st of the new month it will auto reimburse any outstanding road tax to you. You then get the new owner to tax it which I think you can do the day before the new month. The only time it gets silly is if you have a private plate you need to remove as well.

It's more than the principle, it's the £4.5 million the DVLA made last year form "dual taxing" according to a recent FOI request...

What you mean is the tax rebate applies for any complete & unused months , not what PVR is wanting to know .
To reiterate he asked how he can exchange vehicles mid month without the need for both parties to pay road tax for that month
I think pvr needs to drive it round his mates near the end of the month where it will sit unused until the new owner taxes it from the 1st :?
Rob
His mate can drive it there, it's just the tax. it just needs to sit some where for a day or two between sorn and re-tax on the 1st of April. Daft rip off system. But what can you do vs the tax man. not a lot.

Bought a new daily shed yesterday, so have already paid twice this month.

I am not saving it, my friend will be, so that is called compassion, friendship, doing something for someone else etc. Perhaps you should try that :poke:

I've just done this.
Sold car to a friend. I sorned the car online on the last day of the month and I told him not to drive it on that day.
On the first day of the next month I transferred ownership to him online and he taxed it from that day.

Why bother SORN'ing it, just do the transfer?
