'Marmite' Cars you have owned

Post by Nanu » Thu Mar 01, 2018 8:58 pm

Gov started a thread on Orion metallic silver being a Marmite colour. Got me thinking of Marmite cars?

My example is a dark brown TR7 with gold wheels and gold trim as per the old Lotus John Player Special Formula 1 cars. Sounds awful and most likely was and TR7's are not to everyone's taste but thought I was the dogs b*****ks at the time. Had a second white one and a TR8 after that and didn't have a problem with any, although they were known for rust and the cylinder heads seizing on.

Did see a couple at the Hexham motor show last year and they looked so dated and wondered what I ever saw in them.

Rover 820Si auto. People told me how bad they were. I loved mine and it never broke down, drove fabulously, looked great (bear in mind the hideous Ford Scorpio was also available then), I had the last laugh because they were so cheap to buy second hand!

It was 1994, I had little money and I found a convertible for £290 reading the Autotrader mags (not the car shown as mine had the more desirable brown wings) :exitright:

I suppose the closest to a Marmite car I've had was the 325ti Sport I've just sold.

So many people don't like their looks, but it drove really well!
Coupes because stunning!

325ti owners should stand together and never admit to such a thing 8) A 325ti is a 'thing' of beauty

My smart roadster, laughable spec included a 699cc engine
But it drove really well & had a surprising turn of speed, it’s 800kg weight gave it good agility as well :driving:

My second car, a 1973 Mini 1000. What was I thinking about??? It was rusty, unreliable and a really $hit colour. Looked a bit like this, but not as good:

Of course in my opinion I've only ever had tasteful cars but ....

I've had two cars that some people said 'how could you?' - a classic Beetle in (what I thought was rather fetching) 'Harvest Gold' and a few years later a Millennium Puma in 'slap your face yellow'.

Marmite, love it or hate it. My Smart Roadster was so rare most people didn’t know what it was. My 2cv was definable not marmite as people would love it or laugh.

My Citroen Dyane though, all the fun of the 2cv but none of the charm. I even had an Ami 8, no pics as I am on an iPad and copy paste not as easy.

My last car was a vauxhall signum. An attempt at an upmarket vectra really.
My kids loved it, I liked the looks, but it was really boring to drive and heavy!
I don't have any photos because I'm embarrassed.
:(
3.0si roadster. Requisite stubby. Sound gen mod. LED numberplate lights. LED boot strip. Interior lights LED too. ZHP gearknob. Daily drive :driving:
Motor in boot. Bilstein B8 dampers. New radio, much better sounds
