For me, a 1.4 LX Peugeot 206 was horrible to drive and not worth the fuel and tax saving. The 2.5 litre straight six BMW is more costly in every regard but is enjoyable, it's depreciation free too.
That was exactly my experience! Which is why my Mazda 323f lasted only 6 months, to be replaced by my 325ti Sport! Not quite depreciation free, but £500 for 3 years and 23K miles was money well spent!

I'll see how the E91 325i Touring works out!

If so, then that's roughly the same price as buying some crap car and chucking it away. If I look after it, then I would like to think it would last just as long as a good Zed. I have heard the N52 is pretty dam reliable, so that's why I'm thinking the N52 varieties. Also if I'm traveling abroad with it, then ideally I want something that isn't right on it's last legs.
Just to pick up on that, I just bought an E91 325i Touring for the same reason! But I went for a 2.5 version as I wanted my Z4C to still feel more special! And the N52 engined ones still seem to have hydraulic PAS!
But if you're set on a 3 litre, although a bit over your budget, how about this one from a forum member? :)

i must be getting old, I much prefer driving my audi a4 avant every day - the z4 literally gets used on sunny days ... which is... never!

both cars insured for under £1000 , tax for under £500, both cars stand me at under 5k so im happy to have 2 cars :)

Oh right - but why not an E46 320d? My 320td could do 650 miles on a tank - and at least it was RWD! :)

Yes this looks really good. It's just a touch too early for me to buy one. I don't want to rush into things. I prefer contemplating all the options as often it only takes a 30 min talk with someone to change your mind completely. So I just want ot get to a state where I'm 100% happy with my decision, then go for it. That is a prime example though. Would match the colours of my Zed too which would be nice. That being said, I'm liking the idea of a black one. Then I can get a black storage case on the top (not sure of exact name of the thing, but you get me).

Maybe I'm thinking of buying around June time or so.

How you getting on with your options OP., would be useful to see a short list of best cars to pick from as a few of you seem to be doing a fair commute.

Turns out I may need a mile muncher myself in two months time.

I am interested in a BMW Touring while planning on keeping the 28i at least that's my goal but struggling to come up with a shortlist to pick from.

I'm expecting to do 20 to 25k a year so want something half decent with massive fuel range, not sure what else to consider. Budget wise I'm thinking between 10/12k tops though. If I drop the Z it's a different figure but I want to keep it if I can... driving:
E89/28i Msport gone :( .. Zx10r track bike gone… time for a KTM 350 exc-f and some green laning and dirt bike excursions…. Let’s see how this goes… :

BMW Z4 2.0....... plus Landcover Discovery 3.0 diesel.

INSURANCE COMBINED £980
TAX COMBINED £800
MOT & SERVICES £700

Probably spend £3,000 a year but i don't drink and don't smoke, and golf is my only hobby.

This is roughly looking like my options too.

I'm 99% sure now I can wait 1 more year before I need to get another car which is nice! I'm still keeping a keen eye out though for options.

On a complete side step here. When I win the lottery I think I will have to get one of these!

Interesting read. I was contemplating this a while back. Running a second car, Company car, or just stick with the Zed 365.

I was looking into the e92 or e91 route as well. 320d. No issues with the LCI model, cheap insurance and fuel efficient, so that was the plan.

I like the comment on the car. You want something comfortable. You’ll be driving the Zed sure but you want to enjoy the second car too.

Probably worth while doing if you can afford the initial outlay of a second car. And have the parking space. Which is why I never did this. Don’t have money and the space.

To be fair you may have dodged a bullet there!

The LCI E9* 320ds use the N47 engine - if you google "N47 camchain" it isn't pretty reading!

That's one of the main reasons I sold my 123d - and bought an E86 (as an obvious replacement).

I loved my 323F Sport. not the fastest 2ltr hatch in the wold, but it handled sweetly and the interior trim was well above that of my Z4M. Lovely leather and alcantara.
