In 1977, I passed (first time) in a pale blue Vauxhall Chevette.
It was about a year or so afterwards that I could afford my first car. In the meantime I was added to my mum's car as a named driver but was in fact the main driver (you could do things like that then
)

You could, but you still weren't supposed to! (1977 was the year I started my first job at an insurance company).

Passed in 1978 in my Grandads old 1969 Austin 1300 with a strip-speedo. It had a red strip that went from left to right instead of round dials.
I Googled strip speedo. Wish I hadn't.
Passed in 1972 in Mothers 1965 Austin 1100, with a strip speedo. I drove that and Dads Rover 2000, the only other car with a strip speedo (as far as I know). It was expensive, I had three lessons before my test!

It was back in the late 70's so doubt it would have lasted. Recall I paid £700 for it second hand and all of around 100bhp?

I passed first time in a 1990 Metro back in Jan 1991 after 12 lessons, and went on to drive a £300 1985 Mk2 Fiesta into the ground - I did about 60,000 miles in just over 2 years
