I learnt in a 1975 Mark 1 Escort 1.1L N Reg, then the week before my test my instuctor was given a brand new Mark 2 Escort 1.3L 1978 S Reg. The latter had servo assisted brakes & drove quite differently; much tighter too with it being new. Passed first time & bought a 1969 Vauxhall Viva HA G Reg . All I could afford at the time

Great idea for a post!
I learn't and passed in a Peugeot 206, nice easy car to use.
Then I went and spent £50 on a 1981 Vauxhall Nova SRI, relying on a choke that didn't work, no power steering, not much of anything really and seemed to have been put together with chewing gum... So it was like having to learn all over again.
Man that car was dangerous.

Passed my test on (Friday) 13th July 1973 in my Mum's 1966 Fiat 500. I regard passing my test as being my best and most life-changing achievement. It was at the second attempt - the first examiner clearly did not recognise the innate brilliance of my driving!
In those days you had to wait at least a month for a re-test. When I phoned up I was asked if I was superstitious. I said no and was told that they had slots on Friday 13th due to cancellations from superstitious people.
Dad taught me, just had 4 lessons. The Fiat had a crash box so you had to double-declutch going from high to low gears. It looked a bit like this, but with more rust:

Bought myself a 1961 Minivan for £75 in 1967 - used to jump out of 4th gear ( had to learn to drive with my left leg wrapped round the gear stick to stop it jumping out of gear ) registration number was DOG 756
Took my test in my Instructors Austin 1100 - passed first time - used to pay £1.2s 6d for an hours lesson if I recall correctly
Still got my pink licence - never been nicked for anything in 50 years of driving - shouldn't have said that should I

Great thread OP.
Brings back many memories of being in the 6th form!
It was a big competition among my petrolhead mates to be the first to get a full licence, but being born in April I was never going to win that!
There was about a 3 month waiting list, so our standard practice was to book a test about a month before we were 17, wait a month and book another just in case - if you passed the first then cancelled the 2nd you got the fee back.
So after getting up at about 6 am to tear around on my motorbike all morning on my birthday on 24th April 1976 I had my first lesson that afternoon - as you do! Instructor said he thought I had driven before, but I thought I'd better not let on about the car park "lessons" with my Dad.
Passed my test at the first attempt on 30 June 1976 in my instructor's M-plate Navy Blue MKI Escort 1300XL, and having passed my bike test the day before I was the first in our school year to have a full licence for both.
So the next few weeks I sat in the passenger seat when my mate wanted some practice in his Dad's Cortina as his test wasn't until the end of July.
Maybe we need another poll - How many driving tests did you take?

My dad taught me how to drive in his Mk2 Cortina but I passed my test first time in a driving school HC Vauxhall Viva after just 4 ‘proper’ lessons. I remember it had a 1,256cc engine and moved at glacial speed - probably why so many were used as learner cars
