Air compressor and accessories

Post by Truth » Sat Dec 30, 2017 11:46 pm

With my birthday around the corner my Mrs has asked about a present I’m wanting an air compressor with accessories. Not wanting to be too expensive.
Looking at these two, which one would you wise gents choose unless you know of a better one in the same price scale.

both will be OK for blowing things up but thats about it.

may be OK for airbrush or small gun but no good for full size spray gun

certainly won't run any power tools

also the small ones tend to be stupidly noisy when running and they do tend to run forever. They don't last very long either in my experience.

Mine is barely adequate and its 50 litres, 3HP, 10 CFM (FAD). Cost about £280 - more now I think.
now I'm about to have more time I've suddenly got less toys to play with!

Have a look at these
https://www.sgs-engineering.com/air-compressors

Get the biggest and best you can afford, the little compressors will actually struggle with a blow gun, when trying to blow dust off you'll get about 30 secs then it'll run out and the motor will constantly run.

Agreed with above, I also have the 50 litres one which works ok with not too much noise. It does make you jump though when it comes on as they are still noisy.

The volume determines the amount you can do with it, so a small one is just enough to inflate tyres etc.

I have the Aldi version of the linked 50l SGS unit. Good value on sale at £99
Perfectly adequate for air tools, spraying car panels, big tyre inflation, etc.

As PVR says tank size is what governs what you can do..

Another top tip for machine mart is go buy something small and get on their email database - every now and then they send you an email with a VAT free weekend offer on Clarke equipment and 10% off everything else so I just wait for a VAT free weekend

I've got the Stanley compressor in the OP - I can confirm it is very noisy and the wheels like to fall off, otherwise it works as a general garage compressor, OK for things like tyre inflation etc. However, all of the tools provided in the kit are junk so expect to need to buy better ones. even the tyre inflation gauge I've had to re-seal all of the joints to get it not to leak.
