Import Duty

Post by TitanTim » Fri Dec 29, 2017 1:08 pm

Hi all.

Has anyone got any import duty costs experience who could advise please whether I've worked out rough costs below correctly.

I'm potentially looking at importing a watch from New Zealand value would be $700 but weighing up if I would get stung too much.

I've used an online calculator but unsure if the import duty at 4.2% is correct?

Import Calculator.com

Country United Kingdom (GBP)
Price of product1 = £518.28
Shipping costs = £0 (Free)
Import duty2 = 4.2% (Search) = £21.76
Value added tax = 20% = £103.65
Customs clearance fee = £18? (Parcelforce)
Total = £661.89

Cheers.

Thanks for that, I'm unsure to be honest, VAT alone will be 20% for starters which will be for than 50 quid. For some reason I've found some far east countries don't seem to attract import duty, I've imported car parts before now and not had to pay any vat or duty apart from a Parcelforce handling fee.

It's already listed at 4.2% which is why I'm questioning it and the part of the duty I'm unsure of, whether its correct, too high or low :? It's the figure I really need to see if it's worthwhile.

I don't get this thing with expensive watches, they only keep time same as a £40 watch.I know some watches have functions that are useful outdoors, the price of these has come down to just over the £150 mark.

But that's no different to saying your 3.0 Z4 doesn't do anything different than a 100 quid Fiesta in that they both get you from A to B. The reason you went for a Z4 is because that's what you wanted. No different to watches which for me is a hobby. I'm sure the Z4 is yours :)

I do actually sort of get it Tim. I've spent 1000's on headphones and associated bits of hi-fi. I look at it all sometimes and think 'I wonder if my life would be any different without all this 'stuff'.... then I crank up some gear, put my Audeze LCD2's atop me noggin, play some pink floyd and think to myself... 'yeah I'd prob miss it'

Horses for courses i suppose. Swings n raaaaandabouts.

It's a bit of a lottery as some couriers don't collect the charges, others do, especially the international one's, DHL, etc.
Remember the VAT is the last item and added to the shipping too..
There are calculators on the internet if you want exact numbers

Have imported $000's from the US and most ship items to me as gifts or with low value attributed to them
Jaguar F-Type 3.0 Supercharged V6 S, Stratus Grey, LSD, Active Exhaust, CF wheels, Performance brakes, Sports seats and mods ongoing
Gone but not forgotten Z4 3.0i SE Roadster ///M front, Red ///M leather seats, Aero sills

One man's trash is another man's treasure :)

I was never really into watches but started to get interested in motor racing inspired Watches a few years back and started with cheapish quartz but it's kinda consumed me now and each one gets more expensive, but then I don't drink or smoke and we don't really go on expensive holidays so just and interesting hobby I've got into which gives pleasure as well as being something practically useful.

I remember a colleague at work years ago used to wind me up with her bitchy comments every time I changed the car, alright for these people with money and no kids etc. We all have different priorities and choices in life, no-one forced her to have kids, people like that really piss me off.

Thanks for that, I might drop the seller a line on how they ship their watches out but I expect they will just say the responsibility is me where any duty is payable. Shame I can't get what I want from within the EU, the company is based in New Zealand.

Could ask them to state the price of what’s being shipped as less..... just a thought.....
