I have paid (January) the £100 deposit for my ferry crossing to Europe in July/August and they now ask for the balance of £700
Their web site show that the crossing is suspended until mid June at the earliest.

There is no guarantee that they will resume then and I don't fancy a £700 gamble on a crossing I don't really want to make anyway or that may not be available.

Should I try for a refund (they say thats not an option ) or just suck it up?

Ive used them for twenty years or more but I see a south coast crossing next year.

You may have changed your mind about wanting to travel, but for now the crossing is still going ahead, so I can understand why they don't want to refund, as their argument will be that the crossing is not yet cancelled, so the balance is due.

If you pay the balance (on a credit card to be careful) you can then claim a refund/voucher if/when they do eventually cancel it.

Otherwise I think the best outcome will be the loss of your deposit.

I tend to agree!
The only issue I have is that their ferries aren't running and say resumption is June at the earliest - so they aren't certain of a date - I also think it's better to take a £100 hit now than fight for the full £800 later.

I wouldn’t pay the balance, I’d rather lose £100 than £800 :o
Rob

 - Ive cancelled the hotels in Netherlands and Germany so the ferry is just the final piece in the jigsaw.

I would agree that it would be better to take the £100 hit. It would be a real gamble to pay the rest and hope to claim it back. Have you got travel insurance? If so you could enquire what their stance would be if the ferries were running and you didn’t want to travel because of age/health risks etc. But I doubt they would pay up. We have flights to Madeira booked and paid for for January 2021. However, the hotel Was booked independently so it’s not a package deal. They have already told us they will remain closed, probably until next March. So if, as we suspect, the airline will be flying we will lose our money for the flight if we don’t go. It is just not worth the risk.

Take the £100, hit if it comes to that.
Think the best way if possible later in year is thro the tunnel ,as lest you can stay in the car and isolate.
If were welcome in france and switzerland later say sept i may have a quick week to the passes around Andermatt.

I’m glad I’m not alone in my thinking!
£100 is neither here nor there when so many have lost their lives.

With Rob, I'd take the hit. If just to save the hassle of chasing the almost inevitable refund later.

The worst case scenario is the crossing is available at the time booked as I’ve decided I’m not going. The FCO say unnecessary foreign travel isn’t a wise choice this year.

I think the chances of effective treatment for COVID-19 by July / August this year is zero...

So Ron, can you imagine when you try to get on board on the return leg and you show a high temp..

No valid travel insurance ..can’t get home...deep joy..

Take the hit.
I've just done the same with a £300 hit rather than paying the remaining £2700 for a trip to lake garda in September.
Sure it would have been cancelled but handing over the balance and then hoping to get it back just wasn't worth it.
Plus the extra 2 weeks isolation on return would have drained my annual leave.
Not sure if the destination would have been overly welcoming under the current situation.

I’d forgotten about the isolation on returning home - good point and yet another good reason for not going

I’m hoping the 2 weeks isolation rule has long gone by September. Come on be positive and live up to your signature sentiment. 😀

I'm planning on holidaying in the UK in the zed, we need to put some money into our economy and we have some beautiful countryside to explore.

OP, are you talking Brittany Ferries here?

My group have just cancelled a Spain Picos motorcycle trip that was planned for July. Five bike return journeys and one car. We all got credit notes when we asked to cancel. Some were booked economy class, no refunds in the terms and conditions, some standard class, credit notes with partial refunds depending how early you cancel/amend, in the T&Cs.

Those who booked Standard had the second payment of their booking automatically taken on due date, economy had to be payed all upfront.

On the amend my booking page there’s a contact us section, we all used that and were given credit notes for the whole amount, regardless of economy or standard class. The website said not to use the cancel/amend function, but to use the contact us option.

The credit is valid for two years.

I Booked DFDS Newcastle to Ijmuiden and booked their first class ticket ( Commodore Plus )
They now say it was an economy so no refund - they also say their ferries won’t operate until mid June at the earliest!

Comms has been dreadful!

We had a holiday booked in the Italian Lakes with TUI in late June. We decided to pay the final instalment in the expectation of a cancellation which they did last week. Offered a full refund or an additional 20% on top of the cost to put towards another holiday up to December 2021. Glad we paid as the lost deposit would have been £600.

If I was a betting man I would say my situation would be a very bad bet.

All I loose now is £100 against a potential £800 and currently no guarantee of a crossing or cash back.
Ps. I’ve cancelled the hotels I Netherlands and Germany in anticipation of a no ferry situation and I don’t fancy taking any unnecessary risks anyway!
