Can I change only 2 tyres for non run flats?

Post by petertodd24 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:38 pm

Hi

I am due to have my MOT tomorrow - judging by most of the recommendations on this forum about changing to non run flats I am thinking about swapping if the opportunity arises (I'm pretty sure 2 of my tyres are going to fail on tred). Is it ok to change only 2 tyre for non run flats or do I really need to do all 4 at once? Can anyone recommend anywhere reasonably priced to buy them and what brand I should be looking at? I'm not wanting to spend a fortune!

Thanks

Pete

Pete,
There are many threads on this 2 at a time swapping. It's legal, but the general opinion is not to do it as both ends of the car will perform differently. That said several have done it and to no detriment.

I'd swap all 4 and sell the run flats on here.

For pricing look at black circles, Camskill, etc.

Best to change all four, blackcircles are doing a full set of Falken 452's for £495 inc fitting or without fitting £430, there the same tyre's i'm running on mine and i'm very impressed with them. The 452's are very popular on here for people who have ditched the R/flats.

Can I change only 2 tyres for non run flats?

I wanted to swap only my rears for non RFTs when I got my car, and phase the change to non RFTs all round. Tyre place wouldn't let me! They said all RFTs or all non-RFTs.

Why not change all then sell your spare RFTs?

+1 on the Falkens. They a very good medium range tyre. Changed my 4 a while back and they have been very capable in all conditions.

Swapped my 2 fronts only about 1000 miles ago. Had no probs what so ever. It's ok people saying do them all at once but if you ain't got the dough you can't really do it.

Hopefully get my bonus in Feb so will get backs done then.

Which is why I suggest selling the remaining 2 run flats and doing a proper job.

There will of course never be any issue until your on the limit and in the ditch.

The prices that Blackcircles quoted are for my 18" wheels with a staggard set up,don't know what size wheels your zed is on if the wheels are smaller then the price will be different.

I get seriously pissed off when a two-bit tyre fitter who probably drives a Fiat Panda tries to tell me about the law.

So long as you don't mix with cross-plys (!!!) and sizes are correct you can fit anything, even mixed makes/treads on the same axle. Doesn't make it technically advisable but WTF does yer average monkey with a tyre lever know with his ten minutes of training on undoing (but not necessarily retightening) nuts and balancing a wheel?

Bad form making assumptions like this - what is average? Probably based on a bad experience I would suggest. Always bad to make assumptions like this - assumptions generally make an ASS of U and ME :poke:

Agree Alan - while I would not trust the majority of tyre fitters with my locking wheel nut key, let alone advice, there are some serious experts around.

My local guy races cars, advises track drivers on compounds, tyre choice, etc. etc. Runs a service fleet to all the high performance car brands in the area and is a real pro in his field.

An arrogant, pompous response  And would you personally go ahead with something that 'Doesn't make it technically advisable'?

True, but I can see his point... when I wanted to get rid of the run flats I heard all sorts of tales about legality, safety etc etc from know-it-all tyre fitters. Problem was most of them assumed I knew nothing about what I was talking about.

Sure, there are knowledgeable ones out there but there are also a lot of complete bell-ends as well
