Run Flat Tyre Prices...

Post by Maniac » Wed Dec 28, 2011 7:30 pm

Its only when you see things like the below, that you start to think BMW might have a point about run flats, and despite all the issues with them, you can't put a price on life...

Driver and passengers must stay away as far/soon as possible from the broken down vehicle on the motorway. Call someone else (AA/RAC) to change the wheel/fix the car.
Current BMW: 640d Gran Coupe M Sport (F06), 118d SE (F20).
Previous BMW: Z4 sDrive23i M Sport (E89), 318i Sport (F30), 120d SE (F20), Z4 2.5i Sport Roadster (E85), 523i Sport (E60), 323Ci (E46), 523i SE (E39), 318i (E36).

Is that ripped from a manual? Of course what people should do and what they actually do are rather different and I'd rather keep driving until safe than try a repair and be killed.

You can see most people stay behind the barrier on the motorway when their car is broken down. No one will stay inside the car on hard shoulder.

I think you're getting a bit off track. Preaching best practise when people have died. My point is only that run flats seem to make sense when things like this are possible.

Drivers could have survived if they stayed away from the car. Their deaths were avoidable. If the car was fitted with RFT, the driver did not even have to get out to check the tyre and got hit.

From reading the reports, in one location there is no hard shoulder and in the other location it seemed like the car was on the carriageway rather than the hard shoulder.

Avoidable with RFTs but as ksher mentions, getting out of the way should be a priority also.

The thing is, that while these accidents are tragic, they are also quite rare. I think the concept of run flat tyres is good but I feel that we get stung when replacing them, I mean my new Goodyear F1 were practically half the price of RFT's and that's just wrong.

Two new Pirelli P Zero RFTs fitted today on the back. 255x30x19

£330 each fitted. Comparison with OEM Bridgestone;

IMHO Pirellis are quieter, bite better, more comfortable, and have a huge rim protector which is a genuine plus over the Bridgestone.

So yes expensive but I'm happy theyre an improvement. Tread depth should last me a while provided no more wheels decide to crack. I do still feel a wobble at the back so the tyres weren't to blame. Guessing that's the minor flat spot the garage found on both rears, not worth repairing but enough to feel it at around 25mph. Something to look at another time.

The tyre place you went to, it wasn't run by a Mr Turpin and his mate Dick.......that's just mind bogglingly expensive for one tyre

It certainly shows the value of RFTs.

However, if people were more switched on when driving - instead of driving around without paying attention to road conditions etc, I think a number of accidents could be avoided.

You might want to check online tyre prices before commenting about being robbed. :) go on check anywhere, run flat 255 30 19. Fitted. You might find one or two places charging less but most places are 350+ a tyre. Trust me I waited until the threads were nearly showing before getting new ones!

BMW wanted £482 a tyre.

My son slid his Honda Del Sol to the side of the road on black ice a while back. He and his girlfriend wisely got out of the vehicle and waiting in a safe location while calling for help on a cell phone. As he was on the phone a truck slid on the same patch of ice and hit his car knocking it into a 12 foot ditch where it landed on it's roof, followed by the truck landing on top of the Del Sol. It was flattened.
I can see the benefit of driving to a safe haven but the likelihood of that safe haven having a replacement tire available is extremely low. In a flat tire situation it's always wise to get far away from the vehicle and roadside and call for assistance. IMHO a cell phone is a much superior option for personal safety than RFTs, in fact my Iphone has an App for one touch service. It puts out a call for help and sends my GPS coordinates directly to the Auto Club. Far cheaper than the RFT option and much more useful.
My RFT still have over 70% tread so I will wear them down this summer and replace them before winter with Conti DWS

As RFTs add around £60 per tyre im ok with that as I'd use them to get out immediate danger then press the SOS button on the dash to let BMW take care of the rest.
