Aftermarket Alloys fitment / rubbing advice needed

Post by rick_bubu » Mon May 17, 2021 3:35 pm

Hi all,
Advice needed. I have a E85 2.0i Sport on MV2s. So fronts are 8J ET47 and rears 8.5J ET50. I'm looking at some aftermarket alloys that are - fronts 8J ET32 and rears 9J ET35. The tyre sizes are exactly the same as current - fronts 225 40 18 and rears 255 35 18.

A quick check on willtheyfit.com shows that -
Fronts - inner rim will be 15mm further away from the suspension strut. The outer rim will poke out 15mm more than before.
Rears - inner rim will be 8.6mm further away from the suspension strut. The outer rim will poke out 21.4mm more than before.

My car is meant to be MSport suspension, but it seems that the previous owner has put on standard SE springs. As a result the car sits visibly too high. I was considering either returning it back to MSport equivalent springs (15mm drop) or going the whole hog and putting them on Vogtland lowering Springs (30mm drop front & rear)

My question is, will the wheels cause rubbing or any issues if
a) I only change the wheels (and live with the ride height)
b) change wheels and MSport springs
c) change wheels and lowering springs (and get the wheels and ride height I ideally want)

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Regards
Rick

Hi Rick,

I had 108s on my 2nd Coupe so the same sizes, etc. as your MV2s. It was a Sport model so had the M-Sport suspension and the same tyre sizes you quote.

But then I swapped for a set of 295s from an E89 (same tyre sizes again) that were 8Jx18 ET29 fronts and I had no rubbing, so ET32 fronts should be fine.

The rears were 8.5Jx18 ET40 so sat 10mm further out and I had no problems with them, although your rears will sit 21.4mm further out. But judging by how mine looked I think you'd have room for another 11.4mm. I've seen people running 224s on non-M cars and those rears are 9Jx18 ET30.
Coupes because stunning!

Hi thanks for the reply. Thats much appreciated.

So I guess I'll be fine if I put MSport springs back on and these wheels. How about if I went for lowering springs (30mm) instead?

I can't seem to find eibachs for the 2.0i (fronts are different) anywhere. So Vogtland lowering Springs all round for £125 is the best I can find (and cheaper than full set of Msport/Suplex springs).

The car is my daily, but I just hate how high its sitting.

Id be wary of 8j et32 on the front unless you're happy to drop tyre size to 215 40 or even 205 40 if planning to lower .
As a yardstick for anyone else reading this thread 8j et35 should be the line where once crossed then tweaks will be needed to either arch liner , tyre size or suspension to avoid rub when the car does anything other than tootle up the high street & back home .
Any form of spirited driving in bends or bumps will give compression which in turn will rub the very outer edge of the tyre to the arch liner in the region of the reflector .
Not wanting to disrespect Mr Tidy but the current owner of his car recently posted he had rubbed the arch liner with the style 295s 8j et29 .
Most often its a matter of mm , even down to a brand new tyre against a part worn can make the difference .

Yes you should be fine if you went back to M-Sport springs.

This is how mine sat on them with the 295 wheels fitted.

I liked that that arch gap was even at the front, top and rear of the wheels. Lower springs would have reduced the gap at the top and IMHO just not looked quite as "right".

But choosing lowering springs can be challenging as it can be hard to tell if what is being offered is 30mm lower than standard, or 30mm lower than the M-Sports that are already 15mm lower!

I don't know where you live, but you can go too low! My current MC came with H & R Coil-overs fitted and grounded on speed bumps which made it almost useless in my part of the world. It had been set to ride at least 30mm lower than standard so I got them wound up as high as they would go which was 23mm lower at the front and 19mm lower at the rear and it doesn't ground out any more. :)

Fully endorse Mrwilks comments, I run 225x40x18 on 8.5x18 with et 38 and on standard non sport suspension rub the outer part of the inner liner near the reflector with spirited driving. I originally put 235 x 40 x 18 ps4 but had to swap for the 225’s as they constantly rubbed. It is a fine line.

No that's a fair point as my 295s had part-worn Bridgestone Potenzas when I fitted them. But IIRC the buyer replaced them with non-runflats which would have had more tread, and no doubt more grip!
