How old is this tyre?

Post by mikeyg07 » Mon Dec 07, 2020 4:43 pm

From reading online, you look at the 3 or 4 digits (post-2000) after DOT on the tyre. From looking at my tyre, it seems to have 7G8J M4J which I have no idea the meaning of. Am I looking in the wrong place? See attached photos - one is a close up and another is of the whole tyre.

Thanks!

Tricky to see due to res of image, but you're looking for 4 digits as you say. Can't see them on yours though!

Must admit, you have a strange tyre there! As you say, it should be 4 digits post 2000 (and 3 digits before pre-2000 I think). Your tyre just has some strange pattern reference or other.

I dare say one of the resident forum tyre experts will be along shortly to put us both out of our misery

Have you checked the other side of the tyre at all?

I wondered this.

Many moons ago, I put a car I'd bought some month's previous through it's MOT to be told that it had failed because one of the tyres had been put on the wrong way round.

Shockingly, someone must have realised and instead of taking it off and flipping it the right way round, they'd scrubbed out the 'inside' marking on the tyre instead!!

Checking all the tyres say 'outside' on them is just not one of those things you would think to check when buying a car, but ever since then I have

I managed to find this Clicky

The tyre code seems to match and the date given on the advert is 27th week of 2005

P.s. it really annoyed me you didn't flip the picture :headbang:

Very strange that its not on there! Might be worth checking the other sidewall

Yes, if the full DOT tyre information isn't complete on one side variable information like the date can be on the other sidewall, four digits expressing the week number then year, usually in a box.

It's only printed on one side, so you'll have to get crawling underneath
