245/40/18 square setup on E85/6, experiences? pictures?

Post by minimental » Wed Nov 25, 2020 11:17 am

Hi Guys

I am having a set of ac schnitzer wheels refurbed at the moment and was looking to put a set of 245/40/18s on all around for increased ride comfort, most likely Michelin PS4'S does anyone have any experience running a square setup on 18s on an e86? from what I have checked on my car I will need to run a spacer upfront, are there any other problems I am missing?

I was also wondering if anyone had any pictures of a 245/40/18 (preferably ps4's!) fitted to a 8.5j wheel? i know theoretcally they should run about 18mm bigger diameter but its difficult to gauge that in my head!

cheers

Right, well I'll start by saying that this won't answer your questions exactly, but should give you some idea I hope.
At the time of taking these photos of my wife's car they were on 245/40x18 Landsail tyres!
The front wheels are stock E85 8" width, without any spacers at all.
The rears are off a 3-series I believe, so more dished and stick out a lot more, 8.5" width.
I'll dig out the rear wheel info and get back to you, as it may give you some idea of what spacers you'd need.

Ok, finally found the correct info! Note, the rears are 8" as well.

Fronts are 8J x 18, ET 47.

Rears are 8J x 18, ET 20. Off a 5 Series (E60+), not 4x4.

Not really sure if any of it helps you now tbh?

Thanks for those! I thought the dish on the backs looked a bit too much for 3 series wheels! looks great with more dish though!

It gives a good idea of how much tyre there is though, theoretically it should look a little more stretched on an 8.5j also gives an idea on the spacing i would possibly need on the rears, do your rears stick out slightly or are they flush with the wing?

A square set up of 225’s is no problem at all but ET20’s are a bit too low for an E85/86

An ET of about 31/32 is as low as you’d want to go or they’ll be too close to the wheel arch. Standard are ET47 front and ET50 rear

Showing my ignorance............again. Is an E86 different to an early E85 then?
As you can see from the photos above, an ET20 on the rear with a 245/40 (albeit an 8" width) fits fine.
Not had any rubbing issues, but the caveat is, it's a standard ride height.

et20 on a 8j is equivalent to about et27 (et26.3 if my maths is correct) on an 8.5j in terms of fitment (measuring wheel outer to wheel outer)?

so far as i know early e85s and e86s should have the same fitments, happy to be corrected on that though!

my current wheels are et34x8 on the front and et37x8.5 on the rear. On my new setup I am aiming for about et35x8.5 rear (et43+8mm spacer) and et26x8.5 front (et43+17mm spacer) which is the equivalent of et33 (et32.35) on an 8j. Does my maths add up? also will this cause any clearance issues on 245/40s all round?

I run Schnitzer type 3 wheels 8.5 x 18 ET 43 and 225 x 40 x 18 on my 2003 E85 and clearly no rubbing without any spacers.. 235 x 40 would be a better profile and I understand there is no rubbing either without spacers and Speedo reading within tolerances. 245 x 40 may cause a problem with rubbing and put your Speedo quite a bit out. Look at the various tyre calculators on the net. Mr Wilkes is the guru on wheels and tyres.

interesting! ACS type 3's is what i am having refurbed, when i bolted them up to the hubs they were SUPER close to the front strut, I'm not necessarily opposed to running 235's all around, just a lot of people singing the virtues of 245/40s do you have any pictures of your setup?

Will try and take some tomorrow, certainly no issues with what I have and imho on the road you won’t notice any difference between the 245 and 235. Might look wider. Personally I would go for the 235’s

Thanks, pictures would be excellent! i am leaning towards 235s the more i think about it, a bit more sidewall than standard but not as "overtyred" as 245/40s

I should say that the current tyres are 225 x 40 which are just marginally too small, about to get new tyres as I have ordered a staggered set of Apex wheels from the states.
