Least sh1t runflats?

Post by ihadablackdog » Sun Oct 18, 2020 7:58 pm

ok, so before we start, I have replaced the tyres on my car for non-runflats, so no need to preach to the converted.

Debs (wifey) car (116d - m sport with 18" wheels) needs new rear tyres. Has always had the same Bridgestone model that it was supplied with but we've never been happy with them. They seem to wear quite quickly and a few times she's told me the rear has slid out on roundabouts etc. She's not a nutter behind the wheel, I'd say your "average" driver.

I'm not going to change them for non-runflats as safety/convenience is important....I don't want her stranded by the roadside with a flat tyre etc. I know we could get tyre weld etc, and we have recovery membership, but I'm not interested in that route.

So, to finally get to my question: which Runflat tyre is considered the best in terms of handling / grip / longevity?

Any constructive input appreciated.

I've had a few BMWs with run-flats, and the worst I've had were the 18" Bridgestones on my E86s. :(

My 330i had 17" Continentals when I got it but I've since changed the wheels. so now it's got 17" Bridgestones and there is little to choose between them. It also came with a set of Hankook 17" winter tyres and the ride quality is better on those.

But I've also had a 325i and a 123d that both had 17" Pirellis and I found them the best option so far in terms of ride, although the rear end of the 123d could get a bit wayward on damp roundabouts - probably because of the monster torque and my right foot.

The 123d was the only one I had long enough to comment on tyre life as I got through 3 sets on it. Typically they would last around 25K miles, but when they were getting worn (4mm or less) it did become prone to the same sort of wayward steering that Z4 owners know all about! Although it wasn't quite as bad so long as the pressures hadn't dropped.

I can understand why you would want to keep the car on run-flats - I've kept them on my 330i for the same convenience reason.

Hope that is of some use to you.

I had original bridgestone rft,s when I bought car new and they were crap. Went to Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 rft's and they were pretty good but wore out fast. So I went with Continental ProContact RX SSR all season rft's last year and they are great tires. No tramlining and non harsh ride tire. I too didn't want to go to non rft tires for the same reason as you. Bought my Conti's through TireRack.

I run Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Pressure. It's a long time ago, but I remember being unhappy with the Bridgestone run flats.

My 2016 F20 1 series came with Continental runflats (can't remember which models) and they were fine, no issues with handling or comfort although bit noisy compared to non runflats. In 27,000 Kms there was hardly any wear too. On that car there really wasn't much of a reason to get rid of the runflats whereas on my E89 they came off within days of acquiring the car.

I replaced oldish Bridgestones with Conti RFTs on my E86 3.0si sport. A definite improvement though how much of that was new v old I can't be sure. We also have Bridgestone RFTs on my wife's 123D which are fine.

I’m sure I had Goodyear eagle rfts on my mini one - wanted run flats for the safety/convenience reason too. They always seemed good - definitely less hairy than the Bridgestones on the zed but I often wondered if that was the different type of car/power difference!

I've got Goodyear Eagle f1 run flats on my 535d, they seem pretty good.
