Help Identifying Tyre Damage

Post by Stigbew » Wed Apr 15, 2020 11:37 am

I stored my summer wheels and tyres in the garage over the last several months while I was using my winter wheels. I went to swap them over a few weeks ago and one of the tyres was severly damaged.

Now it was only one tyre and only in the one patch shown in the photo. The tyres were brand new last summer and had 2000 miles on them, maximum. Current guesses include mice eating them, the tyre being in contact with the wall and getting frost damage, wind moving the trye and friction causing it, or there being some oil on the tyre before it was put in storage.

I know the tyre is a right off but if anyone could identify how the damage was done I would be very grateful to learn how to avoid it in the future!

Many thanks!

How weird! Was that tyre the one on the floor or higher up the stack?

Top of the stack, that's of where the wind blowing friction idea came from but doesn't sound very plausable to me

Me neither! I did think rodent damage at first but wouldn’t really make sense if it was top of the stack. It looks just like the kind of damage you would get in the good old days before ABS locking the brakes at 70mph to zero!

That does look strange, the area appears to be the same as the foot print of the tyre when on the floor when on the car, could you have been parked in something before you swapped the wheels over? Although I don’t know what would attack the rubber in that way

If it was damaged by some reaction against the wall, surely there would be a mark on the wall too?
As in, where has all that rubber disappeared to?

Probably a very stupid question, but are you certain it wasn't already showing some form of damage before you stored it. Maybe been stood in oil, which as continued to worsen over time? It certainly looks like it matches a standard contact patch with the ground.

Grasping at straws to be honest though.

No marking on the wall as far as I recall

I am leaning towards it was damaged before I stored it, although I doubt it was a substance because I cleaned the rims and tyres before storage because I wanted them looking nice!

Oh well :headbang:

Looks like the damage was caused when the tyre was moving to me because its not completely symmetrical on each tread when you look close up (theres a "lip" on the right hand side of each tread), and it is slightly damaged further around towards the right too - which wouldn't be in contact with the floor if the tyre was stationary.

You'd have thought you would have noticed if you drove over something that abrasive!

Weird though!

Possibly from some fuel? Did you fill up just before they were removed and stored? You could have saturated the stationary bit of rubber at the station if there was a spill. Or a spill in your garage?

Washed with just generic car soap and some auto glym rim stuff.

I think the comment about moving damage makes sense looking at the pattern. Didn't think I was that unobservant that I could have missed that but I do find new ways of impressing myself!

Very weird indeed..!

Personally I can only think that’s been chewed by a group of something much smaller than mice that get up the wall, say slugs for example, not necessarily eating it but just nawing, lots of tiny mouths over the winter months been at it at night.
