Tyre wall width increase on e89 with 19" Alloys - avoid?

Post by Redant » Tue Dec 31, 2019 6:07 am

Hi,

I was thinking of changing my tyres from run flats to non RF but at the same time wanted to increase the thickness of the walls for more comfort.

I understand that going from RF to NRF will make a big improvement but I wanted to get your advice on the way forward with respect to tyre wall thickness.

Current Set up:
Front: 225/35 R19
Back: 255/30 R19

Option 1:
Front: 225/35 R19
Back: 255/35 R19

Option 2:
Front: 225/40 R19
Back: 255/40 R19

Option 2 does not appear to be mentioned anywhere in the forums and perhaps not possible without other negative results?
I ran Option in willitfit.com and it indicated that the accuracy of the speedo will be affected?

So can either of these be done and if so what are the good and bad points of each or should they be avoided altogether and I should stick to the original sizes?

I am about to place an order for some Vredstein Ultrac Vorti (seems to be a favourite on the forum) and just wanted to get this cleared up before committing! :driving:

Thanks!

You won't be disappointed with the Vred Vorti , had countess sets on Zs & they are excellent.
I never found the 35 profile 225/235 front was a issue once on non run flat.
The rear tyre if you are on 9j I would look to a 245-35-19 profile for best of comfort, filling arch gap yet not look over tyred

I had never considered that my front/rear alloy widths maybe different as well! Silly of me really as I have been writing 225/255 tyre sizes without giving much though about the alloys.

And yes you are right that the rears are 9j while the front are 8j. I actually like the wider tyres at the back at 255 :D and so happy to keep them as is as it also gives some small extra curbing protection just in case!

Therefore seems like if you think front's are ok with 225/35 then I'll go with option1 that has 255/35 for the rears as well on NRF Verds.

Thank you and a Happy New Year! to you and all the forum members as well. :driving:

Option 1:
Front: 225/35 R19

I'm currently using these with no rub (though offsets may be different from yours as mine are replicas):
Front: Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 235/35 R19 96Y on Replica Style 313 8Jx19 ET40 (with 10mm H&R spacer 5x120 72.8 ).
Rear: Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 255/35 R19 96Y on Replica Style 313 9Jx19 ET40.
Current: Still thinking...

I went from the same to 235/35/19 255/35/19. Mine is on 296 alloys so 8” front and 8.5” rear wheel widths. The standard 225 on 8” at the front looked slightly stretched and replacing with the 235s has fixed that.

I am about to change my rear tyres again and am thinking of changing to 265/30/19, thinking the added width would mean the rims of the alloys would get a bit more protection from the slightly wider tyres. The 265 width on the standard 30 profile would mean more tyre wall without having to go to 35 profile.

I am generally happy with the Z as it is just the uncomfortable ride. This venture into tyre sizes, widths, profile %, Alloy widths, offset etc has done my head in! But on the flip side I have learnt a lot.

As I mentioned in one of the other posts, now that I understand the profile is a % of the width, I am happy to stay as it is and just change to non run flats. Camskill currently have the Vreds in my current alloy config for £400 for all four corners. It will cost another £60 or so to fit and so for around £460 seems like a good deal to me. It was a close run between the Vreds and Goodyear Assymetric 5 for me but for some reason the 255/30/R19 tyres ae now being quoted as £311 on the site?? :o must be a mistake I think and if they do bring this down to something sensible then I might go for these instead.

Depending on additional carriage charges, there is for me, get a set of Verdi’s in our setup for about £400 here.

It’s a link I followed from another thread but unfortunately I can’t remember which helpful member it was that posted it, as like you, I’ve looked at that many tyre threads :headbang:
