Here’s my e86 on oem BMW 405M winter wheels and m tyre sizes (225/45/18). Very light wheels as they’re forged and the square set up definitely has better balance as the 3.0si is overtyred with 255 rears. It does not however look as good of course. Hopefully useful context for you...

Are you still running on the standard SE spec springs and shocks?
Ive been reading up on ways to make the ride in my Si Sport a little more supple. So if i 45's fit with the SE setup perhaps thats the way forward..

I’m not now, I’m running sport springs and B6 shocks - rides pretty firm now to be honest but the 45s take the edge off things. I found the sport springs didn’t feel much harder than the SEs in practice. Think it’s a more noticeable difference to have decent shocks that are not knackered (my old ones were!).

do you not get any rubbing with the 45s on 18" ? I was thinking SE springs would negate rubbing because (i think) theyre slightly bigger. But if the sport springs give enough height for that setup then just increased sidewalls on tne tyres would be my first move.... i think..

Only wondering as I wanted to replace the 108s on my E86 before they started to suffer from corrosion around the bolt-holes, and I got a set of 295s from a forum member who had replaced them with a set of 19s. Do all e89 wheels fit an e85, or is that just wishful thinking? I really like the 17" 290 style wheels, I think they would suit the e85 really well.

I think they might as they are 8J x 17 with an ET of 29, so will sit 18mm further out on the front compared to a 108 like my 295s do. On the rear they'd be 21mm further out than a 108 if they were 8.5J, but as they are 8J it's probably more like 15mm further out and people do run spacers that size.

My forum buddy Jamesditchy has recently fitted some E89 Style 325 alloys on his silver E85 which is a 3.0si on Msport suspension. They are 8j x 18 et29 front and 8.5j x 18 et40 rear. Not sure about the tyre sizes or if they rub at all. I think they look great and I know he's very pleased with them :thumbsup:

Those are the same sizes as the 295s I've got on my E86 Sport. I've got 225/40 X 18 fronts and 255/35 x 18 rears and have had no rubbing with them.

But the square E89 17" wheels seem to be 8J and ET29.

ah, according to that bmwstylewheels.com theres also another pair of wheels very similar to the 290s - BMW wheel style 203 - they could be an option - although they seem to come in just 18" ...

I was only worried about the rubbing if i stick to my current 18" wheels and raise the tyre sidewall tbh. And seeing that DaveD is runnig 45s (on sport springs and 18" wheels) has thrown a spanner in the works! ;)
I was considering dropping to 17" wheels just to increase the sidewall height further. Im slowly biulding up a picture of my options on making the car a little more 'supple' over the worst of road surfaces.

Sorry for slow reply. I don’t have rubbing on the 45s but I have had the camber puns pulled so the camber is a bit more than stock. I would like to try 17s at some point. I reckon lightweight 17s with quality tyres would make for a great car. Less deflection on the steering, improved grip etc. Yes turn in will be a bit more squishy t on an road car that’s a fair compromise.

I think with black wheels you need a silver rim still so that you dont completely lose the wheel into the arch
