Puncture on RFT

Post by Petahgreen » Sat Dec 15, 2018 2:31 pm

Hi All,

Had my Zed for 5/6 months and the last few months the front left tyre (MV2 wheels, Bridgestone Driveguard tyres) has been deflating, meaning that I've been having to top it up each time I've been driving(every weekend), clearly this frustrating.

Prior to purchase the wheel has been welded, presumably for a crack.
It feels too much of a coincidence that this is the wheel which is deflating. I had the tyre off this morning and theres no obvious reason for the deflation, no screws or nails or anything.

I'm guessing most tyre shops wont touch welding a wheel, but I also know they won't repair run flats. Is it best to take it in and get them to confirm which is the cause then take it from there?
Historically I've always gone with Tyre-shopper.co.uk to get my tyres. I'd like to keep a set of 4 driveguard as all the tyres are relatively new with decent tread, at some point I'll go with something abit nicer in terms of rubber.
I'm based in Wimbledon if that helps with anyones recommendations.

is it too ridiculous an idea to suggest a new set of wheels, rft are notorious for killing alloys as the stiffened sidewall sends all road shocks straight to the rims, and you wont find many fans of run flat tyres on here, so you may find your binning the poorly alloys and the tryes ultimately like most of us on here do . :(
If you ever think I'm off my rocker.. Just put me back in it and walk away... It's the kindest thing

Who knows how well the welds were done? In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with a welded wheel, but it needs to be done right. Personally, I wouldn't trust welding work that was done by someone unknown to me. Its not easy to know how well the welding was done without an Xray.

If its a tiny (and I mean tiny) hole in the alloy that is causing the tyre to deflate, then it might be the same issue as you get with old porous alloy wheels on classics. This is what I had on my 13" RS2000 wheels from 1979. Once they were refurbed with a powder coated finish it cured the problem. I guess a tough paint film over the inside surface (inside the tyre area) stopped the air escaping.

What about just buying a single wheel. ebay might be worth a try.
