Run Flats

Post by gunners100 » Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:21 pm

Had my first MOT today and it failed on 3 tyres with cuts to canvas
i had a quote from BMW for £950 for 4 replacement Bridgestone runflats

My question is i have read lots of threads about people putting on non runflats, but was told that with 19" wheels there is more chance of cracked alloy's

What are you're experiences and opinions
Thanks

I don’t see how a runflat could decrease chances of cracking as there is so little give in the side walls. It’s also the hard side walls that make the car tram line.

I found the swap from oe bridgestones to Vredstein ultrac vortis night and day, any half decent tyre will make you wish you had swapped sooner. The downside, you only have a tin of tyreweld If the worst happens... not ideal in any situation but a blow out or a big gash in the tyre would turn into a nightmare.

The reality is opposite to what you’ve been told, rf tyres increase the chance of your wheels cracking due to the solid construction with no give in the sidewall-carry on using them at your peril :o

smartbear is absolutely correct. I was one of the early E89 owners with 296 rims, of which large numbers cracked. I avoided this by replacing my RFT's with real tires. the ride improved, handling improved and my rims did not crack. If you are in the position of having to put new rubber on the car, NOW is the time to put proper tires on it.
Sold the Z4 M Roadster and a 911 Carrera S now I have a 2021 Z4 3.0i
