Wheel rubbing on 3.0si E86

Hello,

Looking for some advice as not on expert on wheel and tyre sizes. I recently brought a set of alloys and tyres with the following fitment

18x 8.5 ET35 fronts and tyre size 225/45/18
18x9.5 ET22 rears and tyre size 255/40/18

The alloys look awesome on the car but I am getting rubbing on the edges of the tyres along the arches on heavy bumps. Is there any suggestions on how I could resolve this? Have thought about arch rolling but not too keen on potentially damaging the paint or modifying the bodywork.

Is it possible to change the tyre sizes and if so what sizes could be used? Or is there a suspension kit with stiffer springs that would be used without lowering the ride height?

Any help would really be appreciated.

The rim widths / offset numbers have already reached & breached the line over which rubbing will occur so your only possible solution from the info you have given is drop the tyre sizes to the point where they don't but you may find you have to step into "stretched" territory

Try 225 40 on front if not then 215 40 will probably cure it
Rear drop to 255 35 or failing that 245 35

or worse case scenario butcher or remove the arch liners

no solution will be ideal but bottom line is the wheelset isn't right for a Si E86

Thanks buddy for the advice. The wheels originally came off a Z4M E85 but didn't think there would be an issue between the two models.

Most places near me didn’t want to touch the arches on my e85 as they had done them in the past and weren’t happy with how it looked. It must have been where the panels meet. Luckily I solved mine with different tyres but they’re 19s.

With reference to the front - I’m currently running the same wheel size and offset with standard (non M) tyre size 225/40 18 (Avon zz5) without any apparent rubbing issues on stock M sport suspension (and recent new bushes & wheel alignment).

I've also found the same issue, no one offers wheel arch rolling. Have you had any issues since changing the tyres over?

Thanks Chris, might be something to consider. I'm in two minds to change the tyres or just call it quits and sell the set.

Often the sound is worse than the reality , literally 2-3mm can be the difference of whether rubber meets plastic ( as in brand new rubber with 8mm might catch & part worns on 4-5mm may not )
If you jack the car & look at the liners you can see where the contact points are

Well they’re 19’s so not so relevant but yes a narrower tyre sorted it. I did about a mile with 265’s before ditching them for 255’s and it’s sorted. Thats on a 9.5 19 et33

Yeah I'm going to jack the car up tomorrow and have a look. I know the wheel is catching slightly on the inside edge of the arch, especially on the back.

Thanks buddy. Will jack it up tomorrow and assess the arch liner and see if I can drop into a local tyre place and see what they suggest in terms of a different tyre size. Thanks for your help.
