Spare wheel in boot - or what?

Hi, I am new to this forum so please excuse the fact that this may have already been covered elsewhere (I couldn't see where). I very much fancy a Z4 for a little open top fun at the weekends etc but I haven't bought one yet. 2nd hand it looks like a lot of sports car for not very much money!
I'd like to find out if a full size spare wheel will fit in the boot of a Z4? or is there some other provision made for a spare? - I am aware that it would normally have run flats but I'm not a fan of these.
I would appreciate your guidance on this. :thumbsup:

Most members ditch the run flats as they are awful and carry puncture repair kits (Holts Tyreweld) and small compressors rather than drive around with a wheel in the boot - but yes you can fit a wheel in there.

I have a spare in my boot. It's a space saver rather than a full size wheel, but there's plenty of room and I'd rather have that than rely on a can of Tyreweld. Let's face it a can of goo will do the trick if you have a small puncture, but not a rip, rupture of blowout. Ok it takes up space in the boot, but personally I don't carry much else around with me. One thing I haven't done yet though is sort out a satisfactory way to tied the wheel down so that it doesn't move around in the boot.

It's a tricky conundrum. I ditched the RFTs on my 3.0Si confident that if I were to suffer a puncture that carrying two bottles of tyre slime-type stuff would probably be sufficient insurance to get me out of trouble.

Wrong and typically the first puncture I get is a complete blowout on a rear Goodyear AS2 which caused a complete and irretrievable disintegration of the inner wall of the tyre. Holes so big you could put your fist through and that no tyre gel could have sealed. Stranded I was at the mercy of a mobile tyre-fitting service who ended up charging me £180 for a single budget tyre.

I wish Z4s had a spare! :(

Right now I'm getting a few insurance quotes to check out how this will work for me.

I'm planning to swap to run-flats (actually I have been for ages, just need to do it) and I bought a space-saver, jack and wheelbrace from a forum member who had sold his Z4. Then I got 2 cans of Holts Tyreweld and a compressor as an option, with RAC card as last resort! :roll:

The only problem with the space-saver is you'll still lose most of the boot when you put the flat full-sized wheel in it! :(

I've had non-RFTs on my Zed for just over 3 years and covered the best part of 20k miles. Not had a puncture....yet ! I carry a BMW tyre goo/inflator kit bought on Ebay in the boot just in case and I've got AA Relay if all else fails. Leaves your boot empty and uncluttered :thumbsup:

Hi and welcome.

I only carry a wheel when I’m going abroad, or long distance. But that’s usually when i need to carry luggage so a real PITA.

I would carry a space saver if I were you. Most Z4’s have a staggered setup so you would only be able to carry a front wheel as a rear won’t fit on the front. It’s also lighter and leaves more space in the boot.

I carry a full size 18" (from an E46) in the boot of the Z4C, along with a wheel brace and an E46 jack. I do a lot of cross country driving on smaller A roads so don't want to get stranded.

I obviously need to get to grips with some of the terminology here what with "staggered" etc. Assuming you have a standard flat-ish (not dished) space saver won't it fit at either end? Isn't the face of the hub the point furthest out to the side? I need someone to join my dots please....... :cry:

Staggered in this case and many rwd cars is a wider wheel at the back that the front, fwd cars sometimes have a wider wheel at the front as that's where the power goes
Space savers fit either end, their offsets are very conservative and are ultra thin.

The issue isn't getting a spare in the boot, it's getting a flat 255 rear wheel in there if you do get a puncture (only an issue in the roadster :fuelfire:)

No roof racks for the Coupe, I was gutted when I found out.
There's a thread from someone who modified a subaru one to fit, but I've not seen it done again
