Would you replace this tyre?

Post by techathy » Thu Apr 12, 2018 6:44 pm

Not having much luck in the Zed of late. Today had a fairly nasty collision happen beside me. The only damage to my car this is a bit of curbing damage.

The question is would you replace the tyre or not? I'm really on the fence with this one.

Depends if it has done any damage to the cords or not. If not I would just glue it back down and forget about it, unless you plan on any autobahn trips in the near future.

There's no exposed cords on the outside of the tyre, what you see there is all solidly attached to the tyre.

That looks fairly major to me, I’d be changing it.

If it was mine, I would replace it just for peace of mind, you don't want to be having a spirited drive with the thought of, I hope that tyre is going to be ok,

The problem is anybody's opinion is pure, 100% guesswork until the tyre is removed and wheel, tyre and bead are examined. Since the actual sidewall has damage (as opposed to just the protector being peeled off) I'll wager it's an MOT fail by most testers, simply because of the liability risk if they give a chancy pass. Sidewall or bead failure are a real killer as deflation is instant and the tyre can strip off.

TBH if you needed to ask you were probably uncomfortable with it so I'd change it for sure :|

Most likely yes- it is borderline salvageable but for peace of mind I’d get rid

I was seriously on the fence with this one as I thought the damage wasn't structural, but as all but one say they'd change it's getting changed.

If you do replace he tyre(s) after a whack like that it's definitely a good time to have the alignment done as well, or you could run the edges off the new set in no time.

Was the damage caused by a 3rd party, worth chasing their insurance for new wheel/tyre and alignment maybe :)
