Windscreen Wiper Issue - Relay replacement

Post by Ricardo1992 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 4:33 pm

I had an issue where my windscreen wipers fully stopped working. It was not the intermittent problem (where the solution can be found on the forum. Usually related to the motor) but was working then all of a sudden stopped. I searched and searched the web to find out a solution but there was no how-to guide so here is my contribution to those zed members out there which may be experiencing the problem I had.

If you have checked the fuse and it all seems fine, and this is not an intermittent problem, it is likely to be the relay. This can be located behind the fuse board and here is a step by step guide on how to access it.

Firstly, disconnect the battery located under the cover in the boot.

Next, disconnect the damper clip from the glove box lid. This can be done by pressing in both sides of the clip to allow the small teeth past the pre-cut hole in the lid.

There are two clips which also need pressed in at the top of the glove box housing which once both have been pressed in, the lid should fall and be swinging by the hinge. You should now be able to see the fuse board.

To get to the rear of the fuse board, firstly remove the glove box by unscrewing the six screws keeping it in place. I have highlighted two of them in red, all of which are easily accessible.

next step is to remove the foot well cover which contains the light. This is held in with a further two screws as shown. Once unscrewed, this will slide out. But be careful as the light will still be connected. Again, just unplug.

Two final screws located at the bottom of the fuse board hold it in place. Unscrew these two, then carefully push it back and down past the welded steel plates which is rests on. You should now have access to the back of the fuse board. I have highlighted in red, the relay which is for the wipers. As a temp fix, I used the relay alongside it (on the left, same row, nearest the camera) as it was three days before I could get one. Living in Scotland, wipers are a necessity! A good way to check if its the relay which has gone too. They should be 12V 20A.

Think you need to post in the E85 section.
