Any pointers?
From what I remember both bulbs unscrew in different directions.
This caused me confusion when I was putting the new one in as I forgot and spent ages trying to screw the new bulb in the wrong way.
That’s correct, also the LEDs have a slightly thicker set of spigots which means at least for me that they would not rotate to the same lock position as the oem bulbs...skinned my knuckles for what it’s worth...

Nice effect when finished though..

Are the actual lights any different on the pre/post lci?

If the oem is now white, do they light both rings evenly and can those bulbs be used? Realoem shows two different types of bulb?

The angel eye lights on the e89 are not even..the inners if I recall are much brighter but that’s due to the light channel diffuser piece of plastic that Bmw uses not the bulbs themselves...the post LCI do have brighter lights not sure why....Mine is pre LCI but with the leds has a nice white light without being too harsh..

Further more on this subject......

For the money I’m very happy with mine think they were 22 quid. However as most the inner ring is brighter then the outside I understand this due to where the LED light is in conjunction with the light channel on the halos.

Has anyone found any that light them evenly?

How about this style?

I've tried a few bulbs in my E89 with limited success.

first I tried some 80W LED's from ebay - only the inner ring lit.
So I then moved onto a 55w HID kit. - works but bulbs are too long.

So yesterday I ordered some of the new OSRAM COOL BLUE BOOST H9's

They promise to be 5000k so should match the HID's quite well. Reviews look good. They aren't road legal, but then neither are any of the LED's.

(road legal halogens need to be 4200 Kelvin or less, and 55w or less)
How did you get on with these bulbs? I have removed the led ones I fitted. The outer ring being dimmer was too much of an annoyance so thinking of trying these.

I bought these from eBay, pretty cheap and look good.

Like everyone says, big difference between the inner and outer ring brightness but even still, looks much better than the old bulbs.

Pic attached! Sorry for the dirty headlights!

I took my led bulbs back out. The difference in brightness between the outer and inner rings really annoyed me. Put H11 bulbs in instead of the original H8s. A bit brighter at 55w compared to the OEM 35w and don't look quite as yellow. The H11s don't fit so had to trim the bulbs locating plate a tad.

Just installed 40w LED and very happy with the look. What I did notice is that when you take out the old globes there is a slight difference in the distance between the three locking stubs. With the wiring connector being the 'up' position, as it sits in the car when installed, look at the old globe and I noticed the distance between the stubs left and right of the centre top are further apart and the whole area looks a little flatter. Then looked at the new globes and whilst not obvious, there is an apparent similar distance difference. I marked that as centre and had no problems then lining things up. Small hands would have been an advantage. Remember the globes unscrew roughly 45-90' towards motor. As a person who can make a five minute job extend into 90 minutes I offer this next gem. When my new globes arrived they were already connected to the associated wiring and bits that come with them. Just check they have been connected firmly and properly before going anywhere near the engine bay. Half way through installing light number 2 I heard something fall down behind the light housing and wheel arch. One of the metal transformer type bits hadn't been connected properly and fell down into a place where I couldn't even see it. Getting into the void at the bottom of that area took a bit of effort, but managed to get my hand into the area from underneath. A lot of swearing, sweat, dirt and even some blood later, got it.

Here is a diagram that explains why the inner rings are more reflective than the outer rings.

I have not change to LEDS for the halos because I really don't like how poorly they light up the outer ring however recently a LED factory from China sent me a mail shot, they have just released the LED bulb shown in the photo below. They claim no blind spots and light shine 360º, if the light output is at the same height as per the halogen and they do these in H8, they may well work better than any other LED bulbs that I have come across. I have tried to contact them to get more information but they have not been responding. I will keep trying.
