How to fix the e89 parking brake failure

Post by TDJ Stefan » Wed Apr 03, 2019 10:55 am

Hello!
New to the forum but been lurking around here for a while now.
I just wanted to share my video on how to fix the annoying parking brake failure on the e89 that so many of you have suffered from.
Sorry about all the "ehh" in the video, not really feeling comfortable infront of a camera :)
Anyway, hope this can help someone to save some money doing this at home instead of going to you local BMW dealership and have them charge you 250€ /hour which was what I had on offer.
If you have any questions feel free to post them and I will try my best to answer.

I managed to fix this issue myself with the help of your video, I don't think I could have done it without it so thank you for taking the time to make it!
BMW wanted £162 just to diagnose the error before they even begin to update the software, so you've saved me at least £300.

Wow 250€ per hour? I now kind of feel privileged to be in this part of the world where my local BMW dealer charges around 90€ per hour. Not that I would use them when a good independent specialist is available for less than half that. :scratchhead:

These are the people that need to be told about brake problems.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-recalls-and- ... ety-defect

All those that have had problems should get together and report the parking brake problem.
This item is a safety critical item, it is also the emergency brake.
Software should be fail safe and not stop the function of the brake.
BMW are quite happy for punters to pay to fix a problem they have designed into the vehicle.

Yeah the labour rates here in Sweden are usually pretty steep in general, but hearing 250/h sure made me thinking if I also should go chech my hearing...
Dont trust them either to actually charge me the correct amount of hours it would take to perform the update. But I´m happy to hear it could help someone save some money although it might be some effort to do all the steps.
