Looking for answer on how to... Upgrade E85 headlights

Post by WiseOwl » Wed Jun 06, 2018 12:09 pm

Hi,

I would like to know the safest way to upgrade the headlights on my 2004 E85 so I have a few questions about it...

* Can you use HID kit in the factory fog light housing without fear or heat or melting issues?

* Where is the best deal on getting new head light units with Angel eyes and space for HIDS also?

thanks

I have projectors which will make the beam safe, but yes lack of washers would fail an mot.

Don't worry I can fix that issue easily.

I know there's a big debate on this subject, my mate had his E46 mot done the other day, and he had HID conversion, and it passed, he does have washers apparently, whether its down to that or they just didn't pick up on it we don't know, as he was afraid to ask,

What model do you have? Fog lights are different on pre / post facelift.

Also regarding the headlights, on the e46 the hid’s fit inside the headlight (ample space). At least mine did. And as far as I know MOT can only inspect visually. They can’t go about taking stuff apart or prying deeper. This might be another reason why your mate got it thru?

I think it's down to whether the tester spots it. If you have 6000k HID's it will be a fail (looking forward to that one on my TVR this year, they've been in there for about 10 years no issues), but if you go for a lower temperature burner 5200 (I think) it is nearer the temperature of factory fit.

I've got two of our cars through now. Not a single advisory or whatever it's called now. Not even the engine covers fitted statement that they used to put. If there is a problem then you'll probably get a fail if they find it! But otherwise I wouldn't worry too much!
