Quantum Remap on E89 20i
Just come across this old thread as I’ve just booked my 20i in for a remap. I asked the guy at Heinz Performance here in Belgium is there a difference between the 28i and 20i. His answer was; well yes and no, it’s almost identical but as he found out in the early days of remapping the 20i people were returning with engine problems. Turns out that the piston arms are stronger and capable of more power on the 28i. Since then he restricts the 20i to upto 255hp While the 28i can reach up to 310hp.

That’s not right, look on real oem.com and see for yourself-the engine components fitted to uk cars are identical.Kew wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 4:23 pm Just come across this old thread as I’ve just booked my 20i in for a remap. Then show something else that’s official showing any difference, even bmw quote the same compression ratio in the spec listings!

I was making a generic comment about realoem Rob. I'm sure if you Google for 'realoem wrong' you'll find many examples. I for one, won't be searching, as I'm off out for some roof down action in the Zed!
Btw.. did you know that the 28i has a different compression ratio?

That backs up what I’ve been led to believe, even Bmw say they are the same compression ratioPbondar wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 12:45 pmFrom the BMW European market 2015 brochure..warmasice wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 1:51 pmI was making a generic comment about realoem Rob. Not being overly mechanical minded, I personally have no idea, but I was talking to a guy Friday that tunes BMW for track days etc, so I thought I would ask him after reading this thread, and he said they are different, the basic engine is the same but the 2.8 has different injectors and sensors and a couple of other bits I cant remember,
If he is right or not I have no idea, but he did confirm that he has chipped a few 2.0 to 260bhp + and had numerous engine blow outs, where as the 2.8`s he has done he has taken to 310bhp + and had no issues,

Yep see where your coming from Rob, but (bear in mind as I said I’m not overly techinical minded, but intrigued)
Weren’t the 2.8s about £5000 dearer than the 2.0 so what justified the extra cost? And why are the pro tuners saying they can get more bhp out of the 2.8, ? There must be some reason for this, maybe it’s pixie dust

I was thinking that also, why were the 28's more expensive if its just a remap?
Appreciate there has to be some premium to pay...perhaps it's BMW applying the "Apple" tax mentality?

Bigger front brakes on the 28i, but apart from that it’s what you just said-an expensive bmw remap.ihadablackdog wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 9:44 pmI was thinking that also, why were the 28's more expensive if its just a remap?

By the way, it’s a 28i & not a 2.8i. The range of 4 cylinder turbo’s are all 2.0litre but the 18i, 20i & 28i just refer to bmw’s arbitrary description which refers to output in some mysterious wayRustyZ4 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 8:13 pm Yep see where your coming from Rob, but (bear in mind as I said I’m not overly techinical minded, but intrigued)

Yes I did realise they are all 2.0 litre, I meant 28i just old habits from when I had a 328iSmartbear wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 10:15 pmBy the way, it’s a 28i & not a 2.8i. Guys let's be honest. It's the flux capacitor in the 28i that makes the difference.
