Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Post by Nictrix » Wed Apr 06, 2016 8:41 pm

Fair enough its had a software update but they mentioned that parts can fail.
What part has failed? The software?
Does that not mean it could fail at any time at all?
Not that software fails on its own.

Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Post by Angie4m » Sat May 07, 2016 4:20 pm

Hi, did you get any resolve on this with BMW and an explanation. I've been out in the car 4 times today. Within 5 mins of parking up at Morrisons and coming back to the car I got the yellow P and parking brake fail.

Fab! I'll go to my mates garage first to use his diagnostics machine and go from there

I used to think that the old fashioned lever with a button on the top was a bit "ox cart" but I'm starting to change my views !

Funny, I'm thinking the same. I've had a handbrake failure in the Range Rover, also electronic (possibly the same in the disco?) but I have been able to rectify that issue as it is still mechanical and usually sticking shoes.

Now it's going to be the inconvenience of getting it to the garage and getting the time to do that, really not possible with 10 hour days and the garage being at least 45 mins on a good day. Luckily I park on a flat surface, so I'll not be taking my car to my parents until it's fixed as their driveway slopes.

Re the above:-
Handbrake release procedure - Disco:-
1Turn off engine and Select P
2 Apply foot brake and hold EPB down
3 Turn ignition on and wait for the OK "ping"
4 Start the engine and then release the EPB
5 I The parking brake should have released

A JLR employee told me that BMW nicked the electronic brake system from them.
So there might be similarities to Disco.

Given the multitude of parts they share I'm not surprised.

Funnily enough when I got home which didn't take long I did try the same procedures that you would use on the Disco and RR to reset but it didn't work.

To be honest the issue with the JLR system is usually not it engaging and then randomly disengaging itself so it no longer works, it's usually the fact it sticks on!

Boys on the LR forums all say use it or loose it, I always put my handbrake on, even in traffic it's into N and handbrake on. Now I have to sit with my foot on the brake, my biggest bug bare!

Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Righty,

Well I've done a diagnostics scan on the car and I get error code 6017 which is the wheel speed sensor DFA_EMF in the parking brake module.

Turns out that a drop in voltage I.e. Your battery charge is low can throw this up. So if you've a new car and leave it parked up for 3 weeks you might get the same issue.

Basically the only way to cure this is to complete a full softwear update to the vehicle including CAS per diag code D3440_EMF0000T_90_200. After programing fault codes should be cleared and road tested performed.

So I suspect that's what happened to be OP in this one. It's a joke really that it can throw an error that can only be resolved via a softwear update. Now to get it booked in.

So glad I've just had a multitude of niggles rather than actual failures.

I think most cars get niggles - just most are not reported !

Not yet, I've not had time to get to the garage. Issue with working 10 hours a day plus and they want it all day incase it doesn't work first time. Hopefully on Monday it will be sorted. According to the dealer they've had several Z4s with this wheel sensor issue on all ages of E89s.

Should just confirm that issue as stated was resolved by the software update. Garage confirmed they've had 7 Z4s with this issue. I was the first to self diagnose and ask for this update independently.

Just remember not to have a USB plugged into the glove box when they are trying to update or it won't allow it.

Wow, the timing is interesting...those 7 that your dealer worked on were all this year? My parking light went amber in August. So including Angie and Mouse that's at least 10 of us with the same fault!...i smell a recall! :fuelfire:
