Hardtop roof issues. 2013 plate

Post by Z4x40J » Fri Mar 27, 2015 8:25 am

Hi all. Just purchased my first Z4 - having issues with the roof warning light coming on & a message telling me the hardtop is not latched. The roof is up when this occurs. However I've had the roof get stuck down, so when you go to put the roof back up the rear window section won't engage back into place. The issue has also affected the boot locking it and not allowing me access even thoough the roof was up! Side windows get stuck down. These are all intermittent problems. Taking it back to dealer this week but this is the second time it's occurreed the first was during the dealers demo run! BMW fixed it the. But clearly the issue remains. Does anyone have any similar experience of this? I've read some links on here and it appears a common problem. Just wondered how this was fixed in the end ???

I think I'd be the first to say it's not common. Most Z4 drivers are not members of this site, and of say 5% of members who may have had this same problem, then overall its a very very small % of E89 drivers. I, in 4 years, didn't have a single roof problem

That's good news that it's not a common problem. Will see what the service centre does next week. However if anyone on here does have the same issue I'd be interested to hear what the solution was! :driving:

I'm sure you'll get it sorted and warranty is a great comforts.

The single biggest problem with the E89 has been alloys.....with a couple of exhaust and engine issues, very robust car otherwise

Well that's covered everything...alloys, engine, exhaust and roof!

Even the ash tray has problems. Mine won't open unless I apply pressure to both the fore and aft edge of the flip up panel.

If you look at my post in this forum E89 re roof microswitch you will see mine suffered this and was quick to cure but a pain when it mucks about with the roof ...

Mine did all you have said and has been fine since the offending microswitch was replaced. I was told the switches are the usual thing that goes wrong. The 3 series had many issues with their clamshell roof but the E89 has in the main been sorted and it is not considered a significant issue in the grand scheme of things.

Mine is also a 2013 model btw.

See the pics I took.
The wires to that microswitch seem badly positioned. Although my cars done 52k and looks fine.
I wonder if the cable tie has been causing some snagging on the wires if misplaced.
The microswitch wires enter the braided loom just below the cable tie.

A lot of owners are not members of this site, so we don't know how common any problem is...only BMW know that.

My 2011 35is (48k) has had this happen twice in a month. Fortunately the dealer is honoring the extended warranty I purchased. 1st time they said the wiring harness (drivers side) that extends up the the pillar from the trunk was pinched, and replaced the wire. The 2nd time they said it was the same thing on the passenger side. This time they are replacing the entire wiring harness/hydraulic line that extends up both sides. Its been over 2 weeks now, and will probably be another week before complete. What a pain !

Had the same problem , symptoms exactly the same .As stated in earlier post a micro switch problem. As i am out of warranty i took it to an independent specialist for roof problems who fixed it with new micro switch. Works fine ever since.

And this is why a lot of E89 owners are choosing to extend the warranty. We all know that the roof could cause issues at any point and it could be costly.

So if you are considering why you should extend the warranty this is probably the top reason. If you've got a 35i or 35is the DTC and the roof are probably going to be the 'biggies' unless you completely blow up the engine

Just out of interest, how much did an Indy charge up fix it?

Sorry for late reply been away without wifi, total cost £280.00 plus vat. Not cheap but probably less than a BMW garage,
