Slightly sticking gearbox?

Post by BotoxBoy » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:44 pm

Anyone else feel their gear changes are slightly tougher in Z4's?

Just got a 2010 plate with 2 previous owners from a BMW dealer as an approved car. It might be me but I think the gears are sometimes difficult to change esp 2 to 3 and 3 to 4.

If it turns out a real problem, would the dealer replace/fix it?

Bought 28th Dec with a 12 month warranty...

The only things that spoils my enjoyment of this car, the gearbox i find typically BMW notchy and the steering feels a bit detached.
In fact i find the gearbox better in the cold than warm.

So it's a kind of normal/known issue?

I noticed it last night changing from 1-2. But I have been driving very differently to my old car due to the, what seems, fast gear changes as recommended by the dashboard gear indicator. It likes me to change up fast and sit in 5th gear at about 30mph, something I'm not used to.

It doesn't 'want' you to do this... it is suggesting the best fuel efficiency. You can of course drive however you want...

I have the same problem, I complained to BMW and they agreed to replace the gearbox. When I collected the car after the gearbox was replaced to my horror the problem was still there. Now, I can verify that they did replace the box and not just said they did. So complained again and an other gear box. And it is still not right, still sticking especially from 3 to 4th. Mine is July 2010 at the moment 10,000 miles.

Interesting... So would mine be covered by the warranty if I contact them?

i would think so, 3 year manufacturer warranty. don't let the dealer put you off, the warranty is from bmw. i argued my case and got an extra 2 year full bmw warranty.

Who did you speak to? The dealer or BMW?

At some point i may change the gearbox oil, but reading elsewhere the earlier versions seem to be using Automatic transmission fluid.
Anybody have any advice?

sounds pretty much like a normal bmw box, its never going to shift like an mx 5 box but then we are a little less likely to get the hairdresser jokes, amsoil mtf worth a go from opie oils, just check its ok to put in the e89, fine in the m coupe
