First post but hope someone can help. It seems roof problems are not uncommon
Had my 60 plate Z4 for about 15 months.Issue with roof cycle not completing so took to local garage and they replaced internal boot cover. Waste of time!
I believe the issue is a sensor problem but no idea how to diagnose or where locally (East Midlands) to get this fixed. Here is the issue:
Windows drop
Glass moves on top of roof
Boot opens
Roof drops into boot
Boot closes … and nothing but hearing the motor whirring and windows fail to go up.
Red light on roof button flashes, light on dash signals s roof cycle not completed.
Can happily drive and after 3 to 4 miles dash and beeping stop but light continues on button.
I then stop to try roof up cycle (windows still down as I can’t close from door bottoms as roof cycle not complete)
Boot opens
Roof comes over and locks to windscreen
Boot closes
Glass remains on roof
Motor continues to whirr on boot mechanism.
I’m sure this isn’t a battery issue as the cycle can be repeated numerous times. The whirring of the motor suggests that the car is trying to complete the boot locking cycle prior to the glass coming down (and windows going up). Battery has been fully charged immediately prior to trying to close roof and the engine has always been running when working the roof. It seems like a sensor issue but where and how to fix. Any help appreciated.

Hello and welcome sounds like microswitches to me based on my recent experience, do you have a code reader?
Read my thread as your issue sounds similar and this should give the part number for the microswitches - viewtopic.php?f=45&t=130468
If it is they are £16 each and can be done at home with a little care although I had a warranty - part numbers

54377228586
I am sure other with more knowledge will be along to offer better advice such as RobbieZ4

Yes, as Ole gits rule says, classic microswitches problem.
Search the E89 forum, there are some very good threads on here about your exact problem, explaining it all.

Heres where to buy the switches -
Sean your scenario sounds a classic one for it being the bootlid microswitches, or probably just one of them but it's almost impossible to find out which one so change both.
It is a really simple DIY job, trying to find something the right length to hold the bootlid open while doing the job was the hardest part for me!
Sopers of Lincoln (01522)690000 will supply both switches for £33.00 posted, part numbers:54377228585 and 54377228586.
As your car is pre LCI you may need additional connector plugs, as they changed them in circa 2013 (dealer can tell you this).
There are several threads on here detailing exactly where the switches are and how to do the job.

Ah the old microswitch classic scenario.
OP do what OGR says above and if you have a socket set, do them yourself, they are really easy

All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.
