I suppose it makes more sense waiting til the oils warmed up before leaning on the engine, as opposed to the water temp.Pondrew wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 11:05 pmIn the 'good old days' you would have a water temp gauge, and as an auxilliary an oil temp gauge, just for bragging rights. BMW have just confused the issue by fitting an oil temp only gauge. I fear it may be an upshot of their engines being very sensitive to oil circulation issues when cold.enuff_zed wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 9:05 amWell obviously, eventually you will. But it will take a longer time for that heat to transfer to the oil than to the coolant.SV8Predator wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:32 pm
If there is a coolant issue that causes engine overheating, you will see this on the oil temperature gauge.
I was pointing it out in reply to the OPs initial statement that the engine overheated but the temperature gauge didn't move.
I wanted him to fully understand what the instruments were showing that's all.
Oil takes longer to come up to temperature
