Loss of power
Hi having issue today with Z4. Driving with no issues and suddenly temp warning light on and loss of power and fan is constantly on. Engine temp is ok on the gauge in car.
Switching off and restarting allows be to go about 10 minutes and it repeats. There have been no leaks on the.car.
My mechanic is away at present so getting towed home, anyone any ideas.
Also no fault codes showing.

Could be the water pump as mentioned above, when mine was on the way out the fan was on full chat even from a cold start.
I’d get it checked sooner rather than later or it could leave you stranded or damage the engine

Check expansion tank, any water in there.

Good tip, an overheating engine that has NOT lost its water will show a very high level in the expansion tank, a low level if it has lost its water, obviously.
Another top tip if your driving and the temp light comes on, put your heater on full heat and full blow, if it runs hot you still have water.
Either way stopping is the best bet, bricking an N54 is not a good option

I think I'm right in saying that the temp gauge in the cockpit is measuring oil temp, so don't think it will be connected to a coolant issue anyway.

+1. Indeed it does.

If there is a coolant issue that causes engine overheating, you will see this on the oil temperature gauge.

Well obviously, eventually you will. But it will take a longer time for that heat to transfer to the oil than to the coolant.SV8Predator wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:32 pmIf there is a coolant issue that causes engine overheating, you will see this on the oil temperature gauge.
I was pointing it out in reply to the OPs initial statement that the engine overheated but the temperature gauge didn't move.
I wanted him to fully understand what the instruments were showing that's all.

Thanks for all the comments, have just had it on a friend's diagnostic and coming up with
2E82 and 2E81 auxillary water pump switching off/speed deviation - intermittent
Shame the breakdown company showed no error codes.
Just pricing up parts

Bummer, so sounds like the water pump has given up the ghost?
Out of interest, how many miles has your car done?

In the 'good old days' you would have a water temp gauge, and as an auxilliary an oil temp gauge, just for bragging rights. BMW have just confused the issue by fitting an oil temp only gauge. I fear it may be an upshot of their engines being very sensitive to oil circulation issues when cold.enuff_zed wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 9:05 amWell obviously, eventually you will. Very possibly if the water pump has failed
