E89 - Lights on = No power windows or mirrors

Post by huseyin88 » Sat Jul 17, 2021 4:23 pm

Hi guys,
im still working through my transfer of goodies between the burnt Z4 35is i had to the 89 35i i purchased.
Came across a really strange issue.

When i have the headlights on any setting other than 0 once the lights are activated except the standard halos on auto it occurs.

The issue is:
No power windows work from drive side switches, however passenger side switch works.
Power folding mirrors dont fold in.
Mirror does not dip when in reverse.

However as soon as i turn the headlights to the 0 setting within a few seconds they all start working again.

I have transferred all modules from the 35is over however they where all in good working order and before fire and the fire never reached the cabin and was isolated to only the engine bay.
Power folding mirrors have been installed over the non power fold mirrors. All functions work on everything.

The only time the issue occurs is when the headlights are active which is totally confusing me... any ideas where to start or look..

Just in case anyone has this issue i ended up swapping back the original FRM module and everything was fine again.

So its probably been caused by a faulty FRM module under the front drivers side dash (UK right hand drive car).

Good bit of info, assume the FRM module is a similar operating system to the GM5 on older models?

I'm having some unusual central locking issues / window not dropping when passenger door opens, my thread here but obviously not common hence the lack of response :headbang:

I've just been out in the car tonight and whilst driving along I got a warning ping similar to last week but not the passenger door open but the drivers. Only driving for a minute or so but it was definitely closed properly so I've got some gremlins somewhere.

Hard to diagnose as it’s intermittent, glad I didn't take the plunge and change the passnger door lock actautor now until I've done a bit more reading.

I presume your battery was still connected during the fire? If thats the case burning wires could have (woiuld have) created multiple shorts and damage to any module may have occured.

Could it be a dodgy connection or something.
If you have access to ISPA might be able to diagnose it for you. I know when I had roof issues it was able to tell me which pin on the roof module was faulty.

After that checked the line was fine and then replaced the module and all was fixed after spending literally 2 years trying to fix it through checking common fixes like all the sensors and even the wiring in the roof which cracks after time.

Fair point, I didnt assume the module got damaged as all my other modules are fine as a i swapped them in to the new car and all working fine.

I guess at the time when changing them was day time so didnt notice any odd issues and as its my weekend/track car dont drive it often at night.

But fair point hadnt even considered that :|

I'm not 100% sure but I do remember my splash guard was fraying and when I first noticed the fire it was all on fire there before any other mid or higher section in the engine bay once I I the bonnet open.

My guess is downpipes - which were decat pipes at the time go hot and the splash guard got to hot and combusted.

I went out for a very harsh test drive to check out new coil packs and spark plugs as the car was misfiring previously under load and didn't go far but done laps. So nothing had a chance to cool down after short hard bursts. Which the car was then parked up on the drive and about 5 mins later smoke and everything else took over.

But as I said thats my guess and the insurance or engineer never confirmed anything and just stated cause unknown.
I would of said it ws the new coils or sparks as that's all that changed. However that side of the engine was not on fire and was only the second hand heat which caused some surfaces to melt or slightly melt.
