Water ingress... episode 53

Post by Roddy » Fri Jul 02, 2021 7:47 am

I have searched, honest. Everything from boot leaks (many) rear lights, even wiper mechanisms leaking. A reference similar to my problem of today was many many moons ago...

It's rainy season here and it rains, when it stops, it rains some more, heavily and consistently for days. Rain hasn't been too much of an issue in the 8 months I've owned the car, except when the windows decide to open themselves if.... it rains (twice). Usually the car is parked under a carport but today I ventured out and parked up somewhere, strangely I looked for some tree cover hopefully to avoid the opening window issue.

But, when I got back, I found this :headbang:
Not going to look at it until the weather clears up a bit, forecast says Monday may be good. If anyone has experience, where do I start? Roof or door/window seals

First, open the door carefully and see if there's an obvious point of ingress.

If it's not obvious, then you've got to replicate it. So sit in the passenger seat while someone is pointing a hose at the car. Have them hose carefully, one area at a time and if any water comes in, then that gives you an idea of which area to look at.

That's a big leak and I'd have thought it would be relatively easy to spot if it was raining.. this is with the door or window not being opened?

Water does come in if you have opened either..

If it’s caused by the windows opening themselves he wouldn’t be asking about the window or door seals i shouldn’t think.
This must be a separate occurrence whilst the windows remained closed.

No he isn't.... In the past, the windows have opened, yesterday the windows were fully closed, just it was absolutely pissing down with rain. Car wash is no problem, a few hours in heavy rain seems to be.

And it's still raining, I'll have to wait a few days :(

Not saying this is the answer, but I had a very similar looking leak a few weeks ago - it was caused by me not replacing the seals at the TOP of the windscreen upright bit at the front in the correct order; 2 seals overlap eachother where they sit side by side, so they can overlap in 1 of 2 ways. I had the seal off when fitting my MMI box and clearly got them back the wrong way around when putting everything back together - swapping the order of the overlapping sorted it out, for me anyway.

I'll look at that, don't think I removed the seal when installing my MMI, although I may have when hiding the cable from my drive recorder which previous owner stuck on the outside of the A pillar

Edit: This is probably the overlap mentioned. I checked the drivers side and it was different, so I rearranged the upper rubber. (Compare with last photo)
I'll soon find out I suppose, still raining :(

Yup, that 's the one - I did exactly the same, found my passenger side to be different to the drivers side, changed it to match, instantly solved the leak

Fingers crossed it will be that easy.
