MTEC Dimpled & Grooved Discs

Post by Pickster » Wed Jun 16, 2021 9:09 am

Bought some MTEC discs and pads and local garage fitted them while car was in for MOT.
Dimpled & Grooved
Now weathers good and I'm using the car in anger so to speak and getting the roof down every opportunity.

I'm noticing various noises.

when running normally I'm hearing what I can only assume is a rub from the pads and discs intermittent increases with speed can't make out if its both sides or only 1.
under braking the the intermittent sound is replaced with a constant sound fast click which I'm thinking is the pads engaging with the groves on the disks.

Question is am I being paranoid and is the noise just the price of running with the grooved discs and would be unnoticeable with smooth discs or have I got a problem with the warped disks or poor installation.

Any thoughts ?

From everything I've heard they are noisy in use i.e when you press the pedal, the constant noise may be a slightly binding brake caliper
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

Thats what they do, mine are the same. I was going to get them on the back as well, don't think I'll bother!

Had my Mtec on the car must be 6 years now on my 23i.
They are quiet, no noise and seem to be lasting a long time.
Little pad wear as would be expected.

If they are noisy, then something gone wrong somewhere.
I think my discs might be on backwards.

I agree, Mtec Drilled and grooved front and back and areall silent.
No clicks whirrs or squeals in over 2 years.

They work just great IMO

Cant see how a pad can catch on a disc groove personally

They make the same whooshing sound that the drilled disks do on the various motorbikes I've had over the years, I can't hear the ones on the Z4 unless I've got the roof and windows down.

Maybe in not trying hard enough, I tend not to jump on the brakes unless an emergency

:o odd that some are running silently, pretty much every thread on here about them down the years have mentioned noisy operation, its the reason I've always avoided them

Never seen any threads on MTEC discs, good or bad.
I would say go for it, they look good and reduce wear.
My car discs have no scores and about a finger nail thickness lip after 40k miles.
And checked my discs are on the correct way round.

Might be your pads, do you have std pads or an upgraded item?

Pads are standard MTEC own brand bought with the discs.
The noise under braking sounds like a fast click ,almost like an auto ignition on a gas appliance.
Then there's the rub increases and decreases with speed.
Thought they were just bedding in noises but I've done over a 1000 miles with them now and still same. Hence I'm thinking there's an issue

Not just a stone caught in a pad. Is it both wheels in a pair?
Tried jacking up and turning by hand?
