New Battery Problem Registering with Carly

Post by Pickster » Sat May 22, 2021 3:23 pm

Got a new battery delivered this week from Tayna went for the Exide 096 AGM 70Ah as I know others on the forum have.
Fitted it today no issues old out new in in about 10 mins. only thing to do was reset clock.

I purchased the Carly full BMW version to register the battery and look at some bits of coding.
Connected to the car no issues had a little play cleared the fault history etc.

Got onto the battery registry section. Register same battery.
Read battery info, battery read ok.
Register same battery no joy !! engine on , engine off still get the same

Battery was not registered successfully
Please try again while the engine is running. If still does not work, please
turn off the engine and turn on your
ignition to stage 2 and try again.

Did it over and over again, no luck , disconnected and re connected and tried again no joy.
Am I missing something ??
Any help appreciated.

I take it you purchased the Carly obd adapter to go with it? Others have discovered full functionality missing with generic adapters.

Hi Rob,
from my understanding, Carly doesn't work at all with any generic adapter. Is there any other experience around?

Did it several times in between with Carly and the elder, white 2nd generation OBD adapter. Didn't try it up to now with the black universal adapter, I own as well.

From my understanding (and experience), an active ignition is required, not a running motor. Maybe Carly documentation is stating sth. different.

- read the current battery info => that will display a couple of hours the battery stayed in different charging levels
- activate the ignition
- register the new battery, in your case one with the same capacity
- re-read the battery info => the counter list will be emptied, all charging levels will display 0 (zero) hours.

That's all.

Can you provide a hardcopy of your counters?

Perfect!
My first attempts didn't work either, cause I haven't had activated the ignition. So this step is important.

Interesting, that you'll get displayed the unit "kilometers". I assume, it should be "miles" and is a bug of the software, isn't it?

Yeah think it was the read with ignition off then ignition on to register that made the difference for some reason.
And not sure why the reading is KM but all sorted now cheers. :driving:

Those steps work for me as well! The Carly doesn't say that in the instructions.
