2DED - After retrofit

Post by LordLolzeye » Mon Apr 12, 2021 7:25 am

Hello!

I've originally had heated standard seats in my car but I decided to retrofit sport seats (with heating + "all the side buttons" :D). Two weeks after the retrofit, when I've started the car I've had a yellow "car on a ramp" sign which made me scan the car for codes and I've found out that it had a new code, 2DED - power management.

From what I've read about the 2DED code it made me think that it's coming from a bad seat heating module, so I've just taken the ones from the old seats and put them in the new ones, but the code is still there.

As a note:
- After i've deleted the codes, no warning light has ever been triggered since ~ 2 months but the code is still present when I scan for it.
- When I did the retrofit i've linked together the wires from the seat heating with the ones from lumbar support so I won't have to get a wire from the junction box to the seats. Also, because I haven't linked the wires to the junction box, I haven't coded the option on the car.
- When I did the retrofit i've moved over the airbags & seatbelt restraint system from the old chairs to the new ones.
- I've been always very careful and never used heated seats and the "Side seat buttons" at the same time
- The car battery does not discharge over night, I can maybe leave the car off for about
- I've checked the battery drain when the car is sleeping, it's between 0.0 and 0.01 A (i don't have a smaller scale on the device) so it's in the parameters, yet, the code is still stored
- I also have an android screen installed.. maybe it's just a coincidence that the 2DED code came after i've retrofitted the seats? Hilariously enough my car is full of retrofits (PDC, Mirror with Auto-Dim/Compass/Homelink retrofitted before the seats and CIC after the seats - the code was already there when I started retrofitting it), but the only retrofit I haven't done "properly" by linking the cables straight to the designated pin in the junction box is the seats one.

I've also taken my car to the stealership and after bargaining with them for about 45 minutes (they didn't want to take my car in because of the retrofits  ) they finally decided to take my car & test it (they made me sign some papers that any damage done to the car by them is my fault  ). They did not want to do a current draw test on each individual fuse, they just plugged in and did an "Energy Diagnosis" with INPA - what they told me is that the FRM couldn't communicate with a some of the modules from the car because of the "illegal" retrofits I've done to my car  and they only found a shortcircuit on the rear-right side lamp which has been taken care of.

Do you guys have any ideeas about this issue? The next thing I want to do is to put the "side seat buttons" on a separate circuit linked directly to the junction box and code the option on the car & probably change the FRM right after since those tend to go bad all the time and mine has some symptoms that it's about to fail - right passenger window is losing it's memory sometimes or has trouble retaining a memory setting.

Could it just need a new battery? When was it replaced last?

Also, I believe the OEM cars with more options have a larger battery than one with less options.
Perhaps this aspect needs research and you need to retrofit the correct battery to go along side all of the other mods.

I think you’re on a relatively unique journey so I’m not sure there is much help here, FWIW I notice that on several BB there are many cases of FRMs not working post major changes...issues include incorrect coding, incorrect wiring, excess draw on specific circuits and shorts.

In some cases re-coding fixes these once the underlying fault are sorted, but often the FRM is ‘fried’ and needs specialist repair or replacement.

In this case I doubt it’s a battery related issue and your residual current draws on shutdown seem within spec...

Hope you get some inspiration/ guidance

Hey,

Thanks for the input guys,
The battery has about 2 years and it's a 70Ah one. I've also thought about a different battery size, but it is not the case as a full option EU-made Z4 has the same size battery (i've seen it in the boot of a 2016 Z4 E89 full-option two days ago).

Also, I went in and just ordered a new FRM today, it should be here Friday, i'll just replace the one I have, code the new FRM in the weekend hopefully and hope for the best :) (I'll keep you updated).
As well, I talked to the nearby mechanic and asked him to route the wires from the junction box to the seats.. just to rule this thing out.

If anybody else has other ideeas that I could try go ahead and write, I beg you :D. At this point I feel like i've tried everything.

Finally had some time this weekend to properly check out my issue.

Since I've "coupled" together the positive and negatives wires from the seat heating and seat pumps i've decided to remove the seat heating fuses (03,10,68). After 24 hours the error wasn't present anymore so I decided to do the logical thing and just put both the seat heating and seat pumps back onto two different circuits. All nice & done (seat heating on it's own circuit, seat pumps had no circuit since I did not have that option installed on my car from the factory - right?), decided to turn on the car and check that the seat heating is working - works, all nice & good, then I decided to check the seat pumps and they also worked on their own circuit.. with their own fuse.. apparently our cars are prewired for the lumbar support pumps :)

I'll wait 24 more hours and check for the code again, but i'm positive it went away forever.

Had fun chasing ghosts (i've changed the IBS, FRM and both seat modules) when everything was really simple.

Sadly no..given the sensitive nature of some of the forumites I've given up trying to be funny /acerbic!
