Boot Water Ingress - The journey of roof motors, hydro pump and seals

Post by Webless » Wed May 12, 2021 6:37 pm

My existing battery is the Bosch S5 A08 AGM. If anyone knows of something better then welcome the input. Will be ordering tomorrow...

As I am now the proud owner of a Foxwell I will be looking to use that to register it. Will update the thread.

So, almost there

Thst's the same one I fitted when I got my E89 2 years ago to replace what looked like the original battery.

There are plenty of others recommended, Tayna seems popular, but shopping around I found that the price difference was marginal.

Cheers!

Thanks Andy, I checked and I bought it from Tanya in November 2019 so on paper it should be ok but I’ve come this far I may as well swap it for the same again.

And on it goes....

So today I drove in the rain, got home and checked for any sign of water. Now recall the offside rear vent was the one with the poor light gasket seal and bent bodywork near the vent. That all seems dry.

Near side is a different story, if you look at the top of this photo you will see water ! The two drops top right came off my hand.

The electronic box in this side is the TV module, it’s bolted down but slightly raised which is just as well.

Looking at the new light gasket it all seems in good order, looks like I fitted it ok, no obvious signs of water coming through here.

Same goes for the new rear vent, seems dry all round and this was a good tight fit/seal when I did this one.

Maybe it’s the grommet, has anyone on here used chalk or something else to try and spot where the issue is? If so what did you use ?

Also notice very small amount near the battery, looking through the two holes I can see water but maybe it’s ok there and no real issue...

Fair to say I have just about have enough of this now 🙁

Have you checked the top boot seal(up near the hinges) These go brittle allowing water to drip in and yours is quite old... I'll see if I can find my picture..

Thank you 🙏

Hmm it’s possible, I mean it looks fine condition wise and does feel brittle but some possible signs - it’s been parked for several hours now so could have dried out.

Did you replace yours yourself? If so will I need some kind of sealant or does it come with some?

Thanks for your help, appreciated 🙏
