Just popped to Tesco and the car has come up with a problem. Parking brake has failed. Any ideas on a fix or does it need to go to a main dealer?

Forgive my ignorance, is it a manual or electric handbrake? If its the former you might be able to take a look yourself, if its the latter its probably main dealer.

So that's the original battery. Could this be the problem?

The battery causes the problem but after changing the battery a software update is required for the handbrake to fix the error, as said by Maxman

Will need to go to a stealer or decent specialist for the software update
