Trans slipping on startup

Post by 2009CAZ4 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 7:48 pm

Hello All,

my 2009 35i has an auto transmission and its begun to worry me. The car drives great around town but when I start it after sitting for days it tends to slip a little.

I'll start the car, spend 20 seconds getting seatbelts etc, put it in drive and the engine will rev with minimal movement. Always, after another ten seconds or so the car shifts and drives great.

It won't happen if the car is warm, it wont happen if I drove say yesterday, but if I haven't driven for say 48 hours it seems to slip

Has anyone come across this?

6 months ago they changed a trans side? gasket cause it was leaking a bit, but there were no symptoms of a problem. Just a few drops in the driveway.

I still have plenty of warranty life left but I don't want to go to the dealer blind, and have them say "aw it's nothing, come back when its dead."

My 35i DCT is the same. In the morning when I drive off if revs a bit more than normal. However, I think it’s probably normal behaviour and just due to manoeuvring onto the road. If I was to just drive away briskly it does it without any fuss.

My 35is also does the same, pretty sure it is normal.

Is it anything to do with the brakes sticking while sitting for a period of time?

I doubt it would be the brakes sticking, I drive it every other day on average. I haven't heard anything coming from the brakes either. My old Jaguar 420 would get surface rust and squeak when I first drove it say once a month.

I'm glad to hear other people aren't super concerned. Unfortunately I will still worry about it, and update if I can better describe the symptoms.

Maybe, if I'm really lucky I can talk to a dealer service rep and see if they've heard of this, without inpatienting the car.

Thank you guys for posting

Just curious, try warming it up in neutral instead of park. When it starts put it in neutral for a couple of minutes and then into drive.
Same result or better?

I picked up this behaviour a few days after getting my DCT 35i, i whipped it down the local indy who said its normal and very common for people to ask about it.
Still, if you are concerned get it to BMW if its a BMW warranty and make sure you have logged a suspect defect, then if it fails outside warranty you have a comeback.
