Would be tricky, as it’s intermittent and only seems to happen when moving, so would have to have someone in the car at the time, which is unlikely. Had a listen to the engine bay and nothing untoward noted, but it was just idling🤷‍♂️

Idling is no use Smelf it’s not making boost at idle.

right oh, My son doesn’t need much of an excuse to sit in it and rev it, I’ll have another listen tomorrow, so progressively raise the the revs to about 4000 and listen out fro the noise yes?

Yes it’s worth a shot, also boost pipe failure could be the cause too.

So the exhaust valve in the tail pipe, seems to be permanently open, could the noise be from the vacuum system used to activate the valve?

So I’ve tried to record the noise, it seems to kick in when I change to a higher gear at lower speeds, so going from 3rd to 4th at around 30mph the noise comes in, nothing changes about the feel of the car, and if I increase the revs it goes away? The video isn’t great as it was just my phone mounted on the dash but if you listen you can hear the change after the first few seconds, this is where I Chang up to 4th.https://youtu.be/E4inAu9gCLw
It’s the high pitched whistling noise

Another discovery, if I switch to sport, it disappears, this all leads me to think it’s something to do with a valve in the exhaust??

Difficult without hearing it. Fuel pump noise on mine comes and goes with revs.

I’ve put a link to a YouTube vid above, not great but it’s the best I can get at the mo.
What did the fuel Pump sound like, and when would you hear it, did you have to replace it? If so was it expensive??

Hi,
Sorry to be of nolittle help, nothing like the fuel pump noise.
I've no idea but by the nature of it being affected by the revs it is presumably not running gear, suspension etc. That would be more likely to continue if you are coasting, running over bumps etc.
Is the exhaust system secure? Mounts? Could it be tapping on the body, chassis etc? That's going to vibrate in sympathy with the engine. It also runs along the nearside of the vehicle! Is it blowing?
Does the weight in the vehicle have any effect? Carrying a passenger, luggage?
G

I remember a mate of mine's Ford had a turbo seal/gasket blow, it did indeed hiss when revved but no rattle or tapping noise, just escaping pressure.

I did wonder about the turbo as it does sound like a hissing noise, but there’s nothing coming from the engine bay,
Even the wife says it’s coming from behind her when sat in the passenger seat.
This makes me think it’s something to do with the vacuum system for the exhaust valve, particularly as the flap seems to be permanently open??
Where would I find the solenoid that controls the valve, any ideas?

Many people pull the vacuum pipe off the exhaust flap to keep it permanently open.
The idea is then to seal the open pipe by stuffing a golf tee in it.
May I suggest you stick your head under the exhaust at the rear and see if:
(a) The pipe is pulled off
(b) If (a) is a yes, is the end of the pipe blocked off

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Or the vac pipe has split, worked loose further up the system.

I think you need to get the car in the air OP, needs a good look round underneath failing what enuff-Zed has suggested.

Might sound daft, but which end would be pulled off (ooh err, you’d think I’d know at my age😉) it’s attached at the actuator near the tail pipe, where does it track to?
