Map updates

Post by ronk » Wed Jul 24, 2019 10:25 pm

The car is coming up to its third birthday and I realise I’ve free map updates on the connected drive plan. A simple update from the 2018 -1 maps the dealer put on last year.

The process seemed to go ok albeit the require BMW download manager app was very slow rep respond and the 24Gb took 4hrs on my 16mbps Broadband.

The data was put onto a 32Gb stick but used in the glove box or armrest neither will wake the system to a state which will prompt for an install.

The local dealer has a Guru on site and he’s equally stumped.

The outcome is the dealer is getting a pre loaded usb so hopefully that will work - unfortunately it’s not going to be delivered before the sailing to Europe on Monday.

Ron, seems to be a bit fussy..the files have to be sitting in the top / root of the usb stick...the stick has to be formatted correctly

Even then occasionally seems to barf..

A BMW usb in the glovebox not centre console should work fine...

Stick the usb stick in the glovebox..then turn on, start, map will auto load..takes about 1 hour ish..

Format it as FAT32 then transfer the files back over. The Linux system that the nav runs on probably doest recognise NTFS or exFAT

I got a call from the Dealer today asking me to call in as they'd got the latest map update in stock (2019-2) I called in and they installed it for me. Apparently they get the updates on a USB. The connected drive three year map updates certainly didn't work.

Hopefully this will now cure the odd instruction /directions and location problems that ocurred around Schipol airport last Aug - Im not sure if I had been on a new section of road in the area or not.

Tuesday will be the acid test!

Oh the joy, on my old 2005 the sat Nav is as useful as a chocolate teapot, clunky and awful and anything distracts it :headbang: Touch the radio to do anything and you will lose the hopeless map and leave youbwith sound only until you stab some buttons to get it back. Hopeless. My Tom Tom does the work and I leave the pop up satnav screen to impress pop up fans..

I updated my maps about a month ago (July 2016 E89) and was surprised at how nice the mapping has become, as opposed to pre update.
I was parked in the paddock car park at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago and the map showed me the way out perfectly.
Also 7-digit postcode entry. Very impressed at the difference on what is an old platform, albeit in a 3-year old car!

The main reason I wanted the update was to try and settle the problem I had last year when the system got its knickers in a twist - it could have been a new road I was on? That was 2018- 1 map issue.

The new 2019-2 maps look ok but the zoom at 25 yards looks more like the previous versions 75 yards. But if the mapping is ok I can live with it !

So I’m a little confused. I have a 2006 Z4M and am looking for the most current navigation DVD I can use. I have the OEM 2005 DVD that came with the car. Thanks for any help! Just want to buy the DVD and get my system updated to the newest it can. I think I heard that is 2015?

You will be best to post your question in the E85 section
The later (E89 etc) cars are not a DVD based system.
