Replacing wing mirror glass?

Post by mholt1995 » Sun Jun 30, 2019 8:57 pm

Hi all,

I've now picked up my Z4 and (I knew this already) the passenger side wing mirror glass has de-laminated and gone brown at some point- what's the procedure to replace the glass?

Image

I read the post here - viewtopic.php?t=71535 but it didn't give me nearly enough confidence, especially without pictures etc.

And does it make more sense to:

- purchase a full wing mirror assembly in the correct colour (most expensive/difficult option to obtain presumably)
- purchase a full wing mirror assembly in any colour and swap over the mirror cap
- purchase the cheapest used one with intact glass and just swap over the glass between units (cheapest but maybe most difficult to actually do?)

Plenty of videos/tutorials for the 1st gen but can't find anything for the 2nd gen.

Many thanks in advance!

The mirror pulls out dead easy. Its just clipped on. Push in the bottom to get a bigger cap at the top to squeeze a fingertip in and pull.

If your going to change the glass anyway you're on a win win.

It comes out easily following the above instructions or if you brake the glass you were going to change it anyway - just get the replacement before you start - and ebay is most likely your friend for that.

Yes tried that and many YouTube ideas all failed up to the point of possible breaking the glass...ironically the reason I wanted to change it, bring slightly loose, tightened up,as a result...

Are you sure that the mirror is faulty?
If you have auto dimming mirrors they change colour in the centres in bright light.

The glass was shaking in its mount with road/wind vibrations whilst the driver side remained steady...

My driver's side mirror has started doing the same and wondered why, looks like I'll be having to give it a go at pulling it off to check
