Yellow engine light when cold.

Post by chilistrucker » Wed Feb 27, 2019 12:15 pm

Posted about this the other week.

Until the engine temp gets upto speed if i try and accelerate a little bit hard i get the solid yellow engine warning and the car goes lumpy/into a bit of a limp mode. If I stop and swith off, then instantly restart everything is back to normal and warning light has gone.
The general concensus seemed to be a coil pack problem as a likely candidate. I popped to my mate who plugged his little reader in but no fault codes were showing, also nothing shows on the OBC system in the Idrive so I have taken the plunge and booked it in with a local Indy specialist for Monday after popping there for a chat this morning.

They are charging me £42 quid for a half an hour diagnostic systems check, does this sound a fair price?
I'll be interested to see what they come back with, post check?????

Depends on their hourly rate I guess. If its £84 p/h then it makes sense. Probably more useful to you will be IF they find the issue - I'm sure thats not too much to do that, but if all they do is put in their reader and nothing comes up, you wont be happy. Hobsons choice though I think!

Did you do the code reading when the light was on?

Bugger, no it wasn't

The Indy guy said drop it asap Monday and they will let the car cool down before they touch it or do the checks, luckily I only live 2 miles away. I explained the whole thing to him in detail to give him as much as a heads up as possible, so we'll see what happens? I thought it was just a 2nd gear thing, but on the drive home this morning when I deliberately tried to provoke it, I noticed that a similar feel to the car will also happen in 3rd and 4th gear if the car has not properly warmed up. but not the yellow warning lamp this only seems to happen in the 2nd gear scenario, also no limp mode in 3rd and 4th just a bit of stutter.
When oil temp is sat around the centre mark, I have no issues at all with the car, smooth acceleration and a good strong pull through the gears, hopefully I'm just over thinking it as its a new car for me, and the problem is something daft.

Fingers crossed it will get sorted and I guess it gives me a chance to suss out my local Indy specialist.

Engine wise, sorry I should have said the car is an 11 plate, 23si Msport
