As for snake oil, well there are regulations preventing false claims on advertising in the UK so it must do something.
Might be worth doing the old google shuffle for test results if you think its that interesting...
At £16 a bottle not sure I will go that far but will give it a go and see if it makes any difference. From the research I have done one every 3,000 miles appears to be the norm.

I’m starting to think the occasional shot of this might be a good preventative measure?

I never said that

I agree, most if it is snake oil but some work for certain problems. If the regulations against false advertising meant anything then Holland & Barrett would have gone out of business years ago!

I think it has been 'proved' on a number of occasions that half of the stuff Holland & Barrett sell (and I'm pointing the finger at the multitude of food supplements here) do nothing at all. Doesn't stop them selling them though (and doing very well out of it too)!

Chevron was the make recommended and gets all the best write ups so went with that. Should be here tomorrow so will try it and report back hopefully positive results. If not then its having the injectors cleaned manually and that doesn't sound cheap.

Have now put the stuff into a quarter full tank then to help mix it topped the tank up to almost full. First 20 miles no difference but the wouldn't have expected any. Over the next 50 it's running rough but perhaps that's just because I added the cleaning fluid to the fuel and assume it's doing its thing. Hopefully doing a few more miles over the weekend and again hopefully the old girl will run a little smoother. The acceleration appears to be their but the engine just seems to be missing a beat every now and then.

Now done 200 miles on the first full tank with the additive. She is still running a little rough and so far appears to be no change. Not sure if there would be any significant improvement at this point unless anyone can advise?
Hopefully still time or it may take another tank of fuel without the additive, I just don't know. Hopefully wont have to take her into the garage to have the injectors cleaned or replaced as the latter sounds expensive.

There's a design flaw with N54 injectors. There's multiple revisions and only the latter two, versions 11 and 12 are actually reliable.

No amount of cleaning or magic fluid in the fuel tank is going to fix them.

Having a late 2016 car that’s the best news I’ve had all day

That's the benefit of buying later. By the time your car left the production line that engine was 10 years old so you probably have the most reliable variant of the E89.

I think the only downside of later cars is that extra pedestrian safety kit they installed in the front.

So if there is a design flaw, why weren't these included in any recall?

I presume they can be taken out and cleaned as the apparent cost of replacement is eye watering ?

Probably because of the same reasons they haven’t acknowledged the cracked wheel problem either.

Just asked BMW UK the question. Not expecting anything positive but doesn't cost anything to ask.
