AutoStop/Start Not Working

Post by cre8toruk » Tue Jan 08, 2019 3:22 pm

Hi, noticed over the last couple of days (well since I drove it from the garage tbh), that there's an AutoStop/Start indicator with a line through it. Is that a setting that needs to be turned on, is it normal or should i get it looked at?

tbh not really fussed about stop/start unless it saves me a shed load of fuel!

Hi, stop/start will only work when the cars fully up to temp & carrying a fully charged battery-if these criteria aren’t met it’s not operational

On some cars (Volvo XC70) it also needs outside air temp to be above a certain figure even with a fully charged battery and oil up to temp..

Be grateful it's off!

My only experience of it on a 1 Series included a new battery after just over 4 years and a new starter motor after just over 6 years. :headbang: After that I turned it off every time I used the car!

It's a hateful invention.

Don't worry - The system hasn't worked on our 335xd for weeks either - there are conditions that have to be met before it works - Temperature/Battery level for starters (no pun intended)

Personally I don't like it and I don't think it saves any significant amount of fuel.

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

It’s possible to code this function with Carly so it remembers its last selected state instead of defaulting to “on” every time the car’s started

I didn’t realise they fitted it to the E89 - My 2016 35is doesn’t and nor did my previous 2010 3.0l have it fitted.

Does it show up as an option in a VIN search?
OP, I had stop/start in a work toyotal corolla and it stopped working a while before the battery did. But as others have pointed out, the Z4 stop/start seems dependent on other factors such as temperature (and you're in the middle of winter at the moment) so it may be related to that instead.

As I suspected!
If it was such an environmental and fuel saving boon as they suggest, then surely the bigger engines / less economical cars would have benefited more?

I suspect it might be tied in with the fact the bigger engine takes a lot more out of the battery to spin it over to start so stop/start is probably not sustainable for that reason :?

I don’t think that’s the reason as our 335xd has a six cyl Diesel engine - I would think that would take a lot more energy to spin than the petrol alternative?
(Higher rotating mass and compression ratio)

Never mind it’s not a system I miss

Stop / Start allows the manufacturer to squeeze through the various mpg drive cycles especially the urban mode.

I guess if you are in stop start traffic crawling though a city etc it would help...

If you just stop at intersections in the countryside it’s a waste of time..IMHO..
