Yellow engine warning light

Post by Nanu » Wed Dec 26, 2018 3:45 pm

Driving up to the Metro Centre today and noticed the yellow engine warning light on. Stopped and switched the engine off and on again still the same. The computers all say everything is OK and can't tell any difference in performance or temperatures although I did take things very easy coming back. Taking it to the the local stealership tomorrow to see what they say but any ideas as to what to expect would be appreciated.

It hasn't long been serviced and only has 32K miles. Have checked other posts but most refer to having other issues

You sure it’s the engine light & not the low coolant light (a mistake I made a few years back)?

Nope defo the engine warning light. The manual states - "If this light flashes, the engine or some of its components are misfiring, causing malfunction"

Also wondering if the stealership can tell what the issue is from the key fob or have to leave it with them for ages racking up an unknown bill?

Too late, the wife has already made a dent in the credit cards. Hopefully what ever this is will not be too expensive. Hopefully the stealership can tell me whats wrong then I can take it to a local Indy. A faulty engine warning light would be a bonus!

Just been serviced reminds me of my very first and there has only been two visits, to a BMW service desk. Guy picks up phone to customer who just said he has broken down on the ring road, day after the car had been serviced by them.
Filled me with confidence, especially as they couldn't fix my problem and gave car back with beige leather covered in greasy hand prints.

Could be coil, knock sensor triggered a misfire, engines cools down a bit and runs normal, for a while.

Well the stealership have read the key fob and nothing. Can only now go ahead with the full diagnostic check and see what it shows.

Investing in a cheap OBD scanner might be a good investment, enabling you to do your own diagnostic and potentially avoiding costly dealer visits.
Good luck. Hope its nothing serious.

Hope so also. Will have a look at what you suggest.

Meanwhile I did ask if I would do any damage to the engine by driving it until I get it into the workshop(I have about 100 miles to do) and they advised to take it easy but the car computers would reduce the power /performance automatically to protect the engine if it was needed so as long as the warning light stays yellow then it should be fine. All very deniable of course.

Have you had any joy with the dealership yet? They normally ring. I suppose they have a holiday backlog.

More thoughts - is the car under warranty?

If yes, typically if it were AUDI / Merc / Volvo they send out their dedicated RAC specialists, because prevention of a major catastrophic engine failure is cheaper than its cure.

The mobile diagnostic kit isn’t quite as good as the dealerships, but is better than most DIY stuff on fleabay.... & you get seen & checked same day.

I can only speak from other manufacturers though where deemed ‘a recovery’, you get a courtesy car while yours is transported away & fixed... this means you jump to the front of the queue as it’s costing the money with the loaner...

Good luck

Yellow engine warning light

Managed to get an urgent appointment with another dealership (Lloyd, Newcastle) who were very helpful (Unlike Coopers, Sunderland). Took the car out of the garage this morning and started to drive off very carefully towards Newcastle when I noticed the engine warning light was no longer illuminated?

Waited till the engine warmed up a little and slowly opened her up and everything was normal. Even tried sport mode and again everything felt as it should. Rang the garage and they suggested it may be an intermittent Coil issue as suggested by Flybobbie.

So the upshot is on hols as from tomorrow so should get the moggies into the local cattery and up to the Airport OK, but still having a diagnostic test when I come back in a couple of weeks time at my local Indy, as they said the fault code should still be recorded and if it is the coil then at least that will be one of the lesser costs it could have been. Fingers crossed but a lot happier bunny for now at least.
