Z4 boot heavy to lift

Post by gnl » Fri Dec 21, 2018 10:31 am

My 2009 Z4 E89 boot feels very 'heavy' to lift. I don't know if its a problem with mine or if they are all like this.

It's as if the gas struts are resisting me lifting it. I don't know if the struts have one way valves in them that are meant to make it easy to move one way but not the other? Has one failed/blocked? The boot stays up and closes in the usual way. I'm pretty sure the hinges etc aren't stiff - feels like the struts.

Or are they 'all like that guv?' I don't want to spend ages fixing something that isn't broken....!

They're all like that, guv.

Mind you, how heavy is a piece of string? Maybe yours is extra heavy, because there's something wrong, of course. So, it's off to your indie/AD for you, m'lad.

Put some new cheap struts on, mine shoots up now but you have to push A lot harder to shut it, your choice

Is the boot operation independent of the roof mechanism?

I wondered about this myself, as coming from an E85 the E89's boot seems considerably harder to lift. I just put it down to being an integral part of the roof up/down mechanism and didn't think too much about it. Interesting comment about changing the struts, I'd be scared to change the setup, but only through my ignorance of how the roof panels and boot work together to open/close the roof. If changing them wasn't detrimental to the operation, then it seems like a good idea.

are we talking about the boot or the roof , i have a e85 so only have a boot, but i had assumed the boot would remain the same regardless, im guessing the coupe would be differant. But in the aims of consumer research i will have a boot comparison test at my next meet on the 29th :D

Sorry, I thought you meant you changed the struts on an E89 boot. Forgot you have an E85.
The topic was about how heavy the E89 boot is to lift.

Even without the help of spinach or Olive Oyl I can open the boot on my e89. :D However it is heavy if compared to our XF.

What, like watching the rain pi$$ing all over the car you've just washed?

I thought it was a fair question from the OP. He wasn't saying he couldn't open it, just wondering if the resistance was normal or if he should look at it more closely. The question was answered (yes, it's normal) and he's moved on.
Not sure how your comment helped, tbh.

It's really hard to tell online sometimes. Apologies to phoenixboy if it was just a lighthearted comment

Never thought my post might get controversial! :D

That’s fine. To clarify, I can lift it but my wife complained about it..... I’ve never had a boot lid this heavy but not a biggy if this is just how they are.....

Cheers for the thoughts.....

It’s not, just pulling yer leg.
It’s easy to stress over these cars, can make you paranoid.
They are quite heavy, but nothing to worry about.
Enjoy it, and have a good Christmas 😀
